What size socket is needed for wheel and tire changes on the ST?

The manual says 100 lb-ft for torque and bolt size of M12 x 1.5. Does this correspond to a 17mm socket or some other size? Thanks!

19MM as the the others guys have said, do be careful not too over tighten the lugs, I read somewhere one guy snapped off his studs..

Thanks very much. I'll be using a torque wrench and setting them to the 100 ft-lbs in the manual so hopefully no issues with damaging the studs.

hey all, what am I doing wrong? The OEM supplied lug wrench in the trunk doesn't fit the lug nuts, it was way too small. the wrench never seated on the lug nuts, and i was only able to turn it on the very tip of the hex head. it was enough to break loose the bolts, but I fear that I rounded the head of the lug nut and couldn't retighten it properly. i ended up driving around on finger-tight lug nuts [ohcrap]

I could not find a socket that fit my torque wrench. I tried 17mm, 19mm, as well as 3/4" and 11/16" and all were too tight. 21mm is too loose. not many stores around here carry 20mm, and from what I understand, 13/16" is equivalent to 21mm anyway. any ideas? would the dealer be able to supply a new lug wrench in the correct size for free?

It's a 19 mm deep well socket. Are you sure you don't have some type of aftermarket lug nut on there? Not to be rude but do you maybe have some really terrible cheap crappy sockets?

He finally located one and had me ready for tech on Saturday morning but we were all annoyed that they decided to go with this lug size from the factory. I would suggest ordering another set of lugs and go with some 19mm so that you'll always be able to get your wheels off.

I'm getting really confused what kind of sockets are y'all using? My 19 mm fits no problem. Goes on like butter. The reason why they make 19.5 mm sockets is because of the end caps they put on the lug nuts they can become distorted, and swollen and it gets stuck in 19 mm sockets. Best thing you can do if you are having that problem is go to a one piece lug nut.

19mm is for the factory lug nuts. I replaced all of the factory ones on our Escape last year after the dealer destroyed them with an impact. I think the ones on my ST are from my 2011 Fiesta and are looking pretty rough, so I ordered new McGard lug nuts that don't have that horrible cap on them.

Avoid using an impact for tightening as you can damage the studs or the factory lug nuts. I use an impact for removal, but not for installation. I actually use an electric screwdriver with a 19mm socket to run the nut down and then snug with a pry bar and torque to spec. Be sure to torque in a X pattern. After 100 miles, recheck all of your nuts. Never torque when hot. Lastly, don't apply anti-seize to the lug nut or studs. Anti-seize acts like a lubricant and reduces the torque coefficient. That means 100 ft-lbs induces more clamp load than desired. You need to lower the torque value to achieve the right clamp load. Too tight deforms the stud and can lead to failure. Too loose can cause the lug nut to lack the friction between the threads to stay tight and not enough clamp load. Just right is best.

Thanks for the reply. my sockets could be crappy, but it doesn't explain why the OEM lug wrench had such difficulty. Unless the dealer messed up the lugs at the last oil change/tire rotation. As far as aftermarket lugs, I don't believe so. I bought the car with 9000 miles on the clock, and they look like OEM acorns.

19.5mm sounds like it could be mine, I might have to go to the store and do some trial and error.

Considering the dealership messed up the lug nuts on my Escape, the Fiesta Movement ST, my brother's Fiesta, and my dad's Fusion, I would say there is a good chance the cover over the lugnut has been damaged. On the Escape, I had to use a rubber mallet to pound the socket on the lugnut for removal. Once I had them off, they were all replaced. Ford has been using 19mm since at least 2000 and I would doubt they would change to 19.5mm. I am betting the cover is damaged and the 19mm socket won't fit over it.

haha the guy at discount tire actually showed me the same thing...I could not get one nut off on each of the front wheels when I installed my mudflaps. luckily I was able to just turn the wheel all the way and use a flex tool. the back wheels came off no problem. I went to auto parts store where they let me test different sockets and tire wrenches with no luck, said it was a half size due to warping and that only snap on sells half sizes. well when I had one of the rear wheels off I noticed a nail in one (explained why it needed air every few weeks) so I took it to discount for a plug and we got to talking about lug nuts and the issue I had, he showed me that article and I ended up buying a new set from them, and he didn't even charge for the plug.

I ended up buying some six spline lug nuts with the proper adapter to use on my wheels. The factory lugs have a chrome shell around a smaller lug that, while using a 3/4 socket, decided to rotate separately from the actual lug. Ford wanted me to pay $7 per nut! Cheaper and easier to go to an aftermarket lug. Black looked much better with my black wheels, too

Ah swollen lug nuts. I see this all the time at work. Techs that are TOO LAZY TO DO THEIR JOB RIGHT. One too many ugga duggas is all it takes and the lug nuts are trash.

i just went with some aluminum lug nuts....Best idea ever! I went to go do a brake job @26k ...All wheels had at least one that was boogered up.....I got a whole complete set with my other stock wheels that I use for winter time tires. so no I can say I have tons of nuts! but they just sit there as I will never put them on my car again!

It's always good to have some back up nuts. When I had a VW and a BMW I always had spare lug bolts, but they're a bit easier to deal with if one snaps compared to say a snapped stud.
