Cobb AP V3 vs. Mountune MP215

Hello all, I am new to this forum website, so forgive my serious question if it's been beaten to death.

I was wondering what people thought about the Cobb AP v3 and mountunes MP 215. The cobb stage one setup gives more torque (by a little) but less power at the wheels than the MP 215, but it is over half the price less. The MP 215 is a more complete package in regards to torque and horsepower gains but i haven't seen any dyno figures from regular people for the mountune package. It would be nice to see a few dyno tests to see the variance from vehicle to vehicle on the mountune package.

Another thing holding me back on the mountune package is that the way I understand it the mtune only works with mountune performance parts and that's a little disappointing for the future (if that is correct).

I just keep wondering if the 1300 dollar price for the mountune mp 215 is worth the money compared to cobbs AP v3 stage 1 setup.

I hope this stirs up some good quality discussion!

To me the package is overpriced and not worth it...you can get the similar mods from ModBargains.com for about half the price. The only plus side is that the MP215 will be (not currently) covered under warranty.

The MP215 serves a purpose to get the warranty worried tuners into the market with the Ford backed MP215 which to some seems over priced and to others you are paying for the peace of mind of a paper that says you still have warranty from Ford and yet a better acting car than a true factory stock car. I think it is great as it gets more folks in the aftermarket and maybe bit by the mod bud which will allow vendors to develope and sell more product.. Only thing is with the MP215 if you go outside there rules for updates and mods you run the risk of having issues with warranty like anyone would with a modded car .. That said Both are good products and serve a niche in the FiST market I have the AP but would look long and hard at the MR Mountune Race tunes if they work torque vectoring in the tune with a LSD installed in the car.. sounds like some good stuff is coming in the next few months ...

Yeah, having the warranty intact is a big plus. I just think in the states right now the mp215 package is definitely suffering from some inflation and/or import tax. Im suspecting in the coming year the price will drop a little. Honestly though, I am edging more towards the AP. It's a good product and i've heard nothing but good things about it.
Im with you though, the coming year is going to see some great new things and it's nice to read about all the big tuners testing and experimenting products.

I think another downside to the Mountune is the fact that you have to have a Ford dealer install it. That's extra money to pay for products you can install yourself. Granted, the warranty is very enticing.

For me in CA, its not really the warranty, its the CARB cert. I know getting smogged is a ways off but they change the rules occasionally and different smog people are sticklers for the visual part. Also, 5 years to smog is enough time for me to lose the stock parts for one reason or another, and if I sell the car after it needs to get smogged every 2 years, it will have to get smogged then. I went through a bit of a hassle selling my old car because I lost my stock airbox after i bought my place and moved.

The MP215 package also includes your car being lowered...I wonder if they correct the steering geometry as well....on a side note, I went with Mountune's Full Induction Upgrade kit, Mountune AP along with their Optimized Calibration tune(which is written by Randy Robles specifically for your mods, which I installed today, but I am stock right now with 93 oct) and Mountune's Charge Pipe Upgrade kit...grand total: $1298 and free shipping...whew!

you sure about the car being lowered? I havent ehard of that even with UK owners
Ohhhh...never take what I say as anything other than hearsay...BUT!..I have a mind like a steel trap!!! and someone else on here does also, so that means I am not unique and actually someone who steals other's sayings....but that is beside the point...the point is???? I am not trustworthy!!! But I think they lower the car...use your google brain...it is always much smarter than any of our brains, because it is the culmination of all our brains...I think I am mind melding with the internet right now...WOW!!!!

that's a pretty nice price for all that! is that some special deal for you? the charge pipe kit from mountune itself is what like 400 bucks if i remember correctly? having the charge pipe kit in there makes the package sounds more reasonably priced for what it is.

Anyone know how mp215 has more horsepower than cobb stage 1? Is it just the mountune intake? or something in the tune itself? I wouldn't think the mountune would be that much more of an aggressive tune especially if it keeps the warranty intact.

its just all in the tune. mtune was made in partnership with cobb anyways so they must've done a more specific map for hp.
plus, euro petrol tends to be higher quality. id like to see an american dyno run to see what 91 or even american grade 93 has.

Cobb Stage 1 is a canned tune and has to work safely for everyone, everywhere. The MP215 is going to be more aggressive because they will be fine-tuning the custom tune through data-logs. It can still be more aggressive and also be plenty safe.

Nope, the MP215 is a canned tune as well. The MP215 kit comes with the upgraded airbox + filter and the mTune unit which is essentially an AP that has been locked by Mountune with a specific tune. You can't even revert back to stock on your own!

That being said, I believe they are comparable. I don't think anyone has dynoed an MP215 yet to get a rating at the wheels.

Also, Mountune does offer a Cobb AP with data logging and custom tuning (by Randy). I think that this is what you are referring to. I've heard good reviews. I would do the Mountune custom tune over the Cobb OTS Stage 1 even if I wasn't planning extensive hardware upgrade. I think Cobb is going to do custom tunes as well though..

Interesting. My understanding was that the MP215 (or any AP3) purchase included custom tuning revisions for 45 days. If I'm wrong then out makes it seem like a pretty horrible deal considering the additional $150 charge for custom tuning and the $580 premium over the Cobb Stage 1 package.
