While waiting for an EFR, manifold, etc......I was offered the opportunity to get some tweaks done to see just what this thing can do. All goes well I will have it back in a week or so, bolted on and then I still have to break the car in so will take it easy for a bit then start pushing it and working on the tune via email.

I will get it on a dyno after it is sorted out and tuned properly.

Goals:
Trim back the rapid onset of boost.
Wider torque curve.
As much HP as it can make within reason and much better top end.
LOW COST

I will still be looking towards the EFR when available but this could do all I want and if so will stay with it.

It will open the doors for those that do not have the budget for the EFR to make much more HP than possible with the stock unit.

If you end up going this way do yourself a favor and buy a few low cost tools at do some manifold porting, it needs it badly!

No details to be released until I have it back and on the car as I have nothing more I can say anyway:)

Have a great weekend!
Rick

Cool very interested as I might be going the same route on mine through ExtremTurboShop in Lakeland! He wants to port the compressor housing and machine a billet 3" bell mouth in it and then use a EVO16G compressor side and see how that works out but I need a good core turbo first to send him.

Are you upgrading the turbine at all? That's the real flow bottleneck here since it's the size of a half dollar. ;)

I have a couple quotes from some rebuild places for both turbine and compressor wheel upgrade around $1200-$1500 which to me is not worth it at all.

Clipped turbine and slight compressor wheel upgrade around $800 which might be ok but honestly not really sure if it's worth even that for the SMALL potential that could be.

I cant speak for RAAM but im going one step at a time since my expenses will be covered for R.D. I will be doing the large bell mouth and EVO comp wheel first to see what the results are if even possible, then from that point we shall see what happens on the exhaust turbine. Also going to experiment with a Ko4 option via a manifold too turbine housing 25deg offset adapter.

I'll be amazed if a Evo compressor fits in there, but I've been amazed a lot in my life. ;)

Custom compressor.

Clipped carefully clipped turbine.

Porting as required.

See what happens, the goal is to keep the cost down for those wanting to keep the stock look, budget concerns, etc....

Get to nuts on it then may as well get the EFR.

For me the EFR is not a real big expense as I can make all the parts to use it if need be and I have a great price lined up on one.

Ok, so the same things done as the $800 upgrade I was quoted. I'd probably say 15whp but should be interesting to see what it does! For sure keep us in the loop.

$800 is extremely reasonable for a mod like that. Its not like this stuff just bolts in. Machining, balancing, and a rebuilt kit is all required. And if not done properly, it can end bad. So $800 is very reasonable Razor. 15whp peak wouldn't be worth it alone. BUT if we could make 200whp for more than 300rpm at a time and extend the torque into tje higher RPMs, the gains at 7,000rpms could be 50whp, even if the PEAK gains ( at 5,000rpms) are not much higher :)

I would not spend $800 for 15 WHP but then again I have spent that much on a shifter......in the past before I retired that is....

I am getting a deal on this for letting them use the turbo so my cost is going to be quite reasonable if it makes some good power.

If peak gains were only 15 but it spreads out the torque curve, etc.....it might be worth it.

If it lessens the strain on this little turbo and can make the power with less heat.....worth it.

If it does a nice job but not quite what I want(need is relative so I just said want) I can work a deal with a trade for somebody that would love to get it for a great price.

It only took and hour to pull it off the car, pack it and take it to the post office, will take slightly longer to reinstall it and then deal with a tune.

I had not even considered something like this but if we get a nice surprise and it does all I need I will be very happy as I need to get this car done and on the road...still only has 293 miles on it and over 4 months since I bought it.

SO you had your car dyno'd stock so we can see the gains ?? or are they putting it on a car testing then updating the turbo and retesting ?? Not to seem like a Azzhat but I am curious how they will measure the improvment..

OK, got me there, did not even think about it.

I really do not care what the numbers are specifically compared to my car stock. I just do not like any of the dyno plots I have seen on the stock turbo no matter the mods done, or not done, I just want a wider powerband and some more up top at a bare minimum. There has been enough stock dyno runs done to pretty much give an idea of what these cars average stock, good enough for me.

For those that are more into the numbers I cannot do anything now to help as I drove my car less than 20 miles stock and started modding and no turning back now, not able to if I wanted to without a major headache and serious cost.

But, if all goes well then somebody else will do this by the numbers I am sure:)

It would need to flow 6-7lb/min more than stock at 7,000 rpm to create a 50whp gain and that would only be on a non-knock limited fuel at full song. That's a tough sell with just a compressor upgrade and the stock clipped turbine. That thing is TINY.

The Lancer Ralliarts have a larger turbo than the FiST stock and with a turbine/compressor upgrade they make about 20-30whp more than the stock spec turbo.

I'm totally for trying this upgrade out, do not get me wrong, but I also like expectations rooted in reality. :)

LMAO Iso100 Thanks

Raam I agreed numbers are a good talking point but if you like the way the car drives they are irrelavant. I just wanted to ask before somebody else and I also Agree the stock numbers while fun are a bit limiting once you are in 4th gear and above at the track so I was just playing the devils advocate for ya :)
It is ALWAYs good to have options so thanks for going ahead with this and I do look forward to the results ;)

I wouldn't bother moding this turbo myself, not for 800 bucks anyway. If your getting a deal and it works out cheaper than 800, maybe.
At the end of the day your still stuck with the tiny turbine housing. Exhaust manifold peak back pressure would have to be close to 3 times boost, that's lots of heat.
But then again, Pumaspeed are claiming 270bhp with a hybrid turbo so there you go.

50whp was just a number i was throwing around. We all have no idea what it could do 7,000 rpm vs 7,000rpm, but the pumaspeed graph at 6500-7,000rpm is wha I'm talking about. It may not gain crazy peak amounts, BUT what is the power difference at 6500-7,000rpms with very little given up in the spool/response area.

At least my manifold is ported about as much as you would want to port one and as cleanly flowing as I could make it which will help a bit I am sure.

I am not expecting miracles, power costs money, always has, always will but it does not have to cost stupid amounts for some nice gains.

I am excited to do this just to see, like I was when I wanted to get all I could out of the TRD SC on the Scion TC though I knew it was just a step in the path I was taking, it did make just 250WHP but it was the most anybody had made but I was gathering parts to build this.

Equal length to within mm, twin scroll hybrid, the next step was to split the WG pipe down the middle right up to the valve, 50 hours of my time into the manifold then paid the best welder in the country to weld it with instructions for absolute reliability over looks.

It was a licensed car but rarely driven on the street so a tubular manifold would be fine, for the street I prefer cast for a car like the ST that will be driven quite a bit, I am anxiously waiting for one in the works for the EFR. I was about to order the parts to make an adapter then found out about the cast manifold and have been waiting since. Once I have one I can sell my ported manifold, modded turbo and associated parts, even the tune can be used with maybe a bit of tweaking so somebody can get a nice bolt on stock looking upgrade for a good price, unless it does all I want it to that is:)

I always build the most balanced and sorted out vehicle I can for the intended purpose(s) and then add the power as needed, once I have enough then I just make sure it is as reliable as possible and have taken on many much higher powered ones over the years and done exceedingly well. I find it more rewarding when I build the wrong car for the class, a real underdog, taking it to a 2nd or 3rd place car, than taking the best car for the class and making it the #1 car, most anybody can do that. Other than my 510 days FWD has been the most fun for some reason and this is the best FWD I will have built even compared to this, the goal I have at least:)

I just looked at pumaspeeds dyno and its 41whp at 7,000rpms and it looks like they spun it to 7500rpm without the hp falling off...

@6800rpms its making 40ft. Lbs of torque more as well.

Not to mention, by the time you have it in your hands, the pumaspeed is $2,000.00 or more + core ( $1600 at least ).

I bet with Razor's tuning and an upgraded stock turbo, it would surprise everyone.
