What is this paint made of!?

Ok so I got a Molten Orange FiST. I love it. I mean I love every single bit of this car.

My only issue is the paint.
Not the color, like I said, I love every bit of this car and the point is the most beautiful color I have ever seen in my life. Everyone loves it and always compliment it. It's a head turner and I swear I can hear a few necks snap when people look at it when I go by.

My issue is that this paint is the most delicate paint I have ever dealt with.
I had a 2011 SES in yellow blaze. That thing served me for a year and I even bought it used. Yes it got its share of scratches and such, but my god, that paint was made of steel or something. I would drive it to shows in nashville and Lebanon and I even took it on a road trip to watch a Nascar race somewhere a state or two away. That thing held in like a BAWSS.

Now I get my hands on this beautiful FiST and I've had a few months now. I have about 5500 Miles on it and this thing has at least 5 LARGE chips/scratches I can show you in a heartbeat. I have a black spot in the bumper because a rock took out a chunk of paint but not the black basecoat/plastic.

from there I have a couple of chips in the hood. That's what's making me upset there. They are large and go all the way down to the metal.
I even tried to do a clear plastidip coat as doing a clearBra was NOT in the budget (jesus, those are expensive).

I got a few chips on the drivers side door (courtesy of the retard with a weedwacker in the GRAVEL AREA...I have recieved compensation for that already).

But I notice that with only these few miles on it, there are so many chips. I know that part of the reason is that i moved from working in a nearby area on a regular road to needing to take the highway every day. So that could be part of the issue, but my last Fiesta drove from Clarksville to Nashville on a weekly basis for shows.

So anyone know what the crap this paint is made of in comparison to the last generation of Fiesta?
It annoys the crud outta me and at this point I may just say **** it and do a wrap and hide away this divine looking paint.

Buy a Hyundai. Then you'll know the meaning of delicate paint.

It is not the paint.
It is the fact that it is blown on with butterfly farts.

You should have had a clear bra put on as soon as you took delivery as I did.

Modern paints suck. I believe that Ford has modernized the Cuautitl?n facility with their new water-based paint shop. I could be wrong..

Either way, even most of the newer solvent based paints aren't as good as the older solvents (including the lead based paints). Environmental friendliness, cost and employee safety are all favoured ahead of durability.

+1 for the condom. It costs quite a few bucks but if appearance is important you, just make the investment. My 3m Ventureshield has held up great and its much easier to clean bug grime off of.

The lower models have been getting the thin water-based paints for a coupe of years now, though the higher-end models still get good paint. For some reason my FoST has rather thick paint, but it's an exception to the rule as many Focus owners have been complaining. My FiST has a coupe of small chips and it's almost never driven outside off town.

I wouldn't say that just cheap or lower level cars get water based paints... Water-based paints are the latest and great technology! Audi, BMW and Mercedes have/are starting to upgrade their paint shops use water-based methods.

My father is an engineer for GM and he told me how great some of the new water based paint technology is for their production facilities (ie. less dangerous to work with, cheaper to transport, fewer hydrocarbon emissions, less local environment impact). Additionally, the technology allows for the paint to be applied in super thin layers very efficiently, so you can realize a ton of cost savings just by using less paint. They are also able to layer in certain paint properties with much more precision (ie. metallics, clear coats). So you get really thin but pretty paint!

It might vary application to application, but in general, most new cars are getting less durable paint.

27xx lbs...paint is just one thing Ford skimmed on to get to that weight. Every bit helps. Shucks for us though as it causes us to go into fits over our paintwork. My Tux Black is looking worse for wear after a year all over the hood and bumper. Even my doors are all jacked up. I wanted a 3M wrap but $1500 was a tad much. Eventually I will have the hood repainted and my bumper replaced and all of it wrapped. Still it is a shame as we are left out to dry on the paint issue. Ford, u guys would have done better on this front.

Bad paint is not limited to Ford. I have a 2013 VW Jetta that after just one year the bumper in particular looks like it was sand blasted. Because it is a company vehicle I did not go with a 3M clear bra. I actually complained at my last service and they took pictures to send to VW. Have heard nothing and it did not appear the dealership thought the paint chipping was out of the ordinary. In a couple more winters, there will literally be no paint left on the bumper. The painted plastic parts seem to be getting the worst chipping. My hood has a few chips, but not excessive,

My son has an almost 10 year old Pontiac Pursuit that has far less paint damage than my 1 year old VW.

As others have stated, everything that use to make paint durable has been removed because of environmental concerns.

My first stop on the first day I pick up my Fiesta will be to get the full 3M treatrment done.
