Rattle/ chatter while shifting

I've recently notice a rattle when shifting from 1-2, 2-3 and sometimes 3-4. It doesn't do it while shifting at heavy to WOT. Just while normal driving when I'm giving it a little gas and pulling my foot off the clutch pedal at the same time. I've checked my accessport for knock or ignition correction and I have none of those issues. I can't find anything lose in the engine bay that would be causing it. It almost sounds like clutch chatter as I'm shifting. I plan to stick my go pro under the bonnet this weekend with a light to try to pin point it. I'm just seeing if anyone else has heard this with their FiST or any other car. Thanks.

Mine sounds like clutch chatter, though I can't get it to do it be pulling the parking brake at a stop and the slowly pulling my foot off the clutch while giving a little gas. It won't do it until at least the 1-2 shift.

Sorry to hear!

Have you been doing hard launches or quick pulls lately? This can produce quite a bit of frictional heat which can cause the flywheel to overheat and slightly warp resulting in chatter and/or skipping during initial clutch engagement...

I've done a few hard launches, but mostly street pulls for logging E10/ E30 tunes. I did, however, smell burnt clutch one time recently while backing into my drive way....I have a water run off between the street and the start of my drive way that dips pretty good...and I rode the clutch a little too much that time, lol.
What you described sounds like what it may be and is what I was thinking myself. It's funny because I can make I make the rattle and I can drive it and make it not make the rattle. It's all on how hard I shift. It only does it under light load and no other time..idle, etc. Ive got to get in there with the GoPro and try to isolate it. I guess if a flywheel/ clutch assembly is a possibility in the near future, I need to go ahead and start researching a suitable replacement...stock or aftermarket.:) BTW, what is the torque capacity of the stock clutch?

I've had almost the same identical symptoms you are describing since I got the car. Tried taking it to 2 different dealers and they chalk it up as normal. Hopefully the third dealer I take it to will decide to help me out. It's been getting louder and worse. Sometimes the noise/chatter alone keeps me from enjoying my ride.

Yeah...If the surface is "slightly" warped through hard or abrupt launching it will produce some chatter during initial clutch engagement through the gears (usually will be more pronounced in first and second gears since shifting normally occurs in a relatively low rpm range) until full release of the pressure plate onto the FW surface...If the warping is very slight this over time may correct itself...

But for reasons of preserving the life of our clutch assembly (and transmission) when I'm logging WOT runs I try not to depress the accelerator too rapidly or abruptly floor it as I prefer to keep transitions to full throttle quick but smooth...I also try not to start runs until after 2000rpm....And last as a daily driver I try to avoid hard launching (which is a good way to glaze clutch pads and/or warp a flywheel very quickly)...

I do all this because I have no idea where the upper limits of our stock clutch assembly is at? Which btw is very good question you ask regarding torque capacity of the FiST's stock clutch assembly setup...I'm not sure I've seen any data on this posted here on the forum or if any one here truly knows this, but since a few of us now have the capability of pulling ~300wtq (~30% greater than stock) I wouldn't be surprised if this is very close or may be exceeding the upper torque capacity limits of our stock clutch assembly setup ..

Hi orpamoc,

Have you been to that third dealer since your post? I want to check into some additional options. Please send me a private message with your VIN, mileage, best daytime phone number, full name, and preferred dealer's name/location.

Hi Meagan,

I have not yet been to the third dealer as of yet due to work and other circumstances. This third dealer I'm looking to go to is the one I purchased my car from and it is over an hour away from me. The only times I have available to drive out there would be on the weekends, but from what I've been told, they do not have "transmission techs" on the weekends or may only provide limited services on Saturdays and Sundays. Not sure how accurate that is, just what I was told.

I would have to request a day off from work to do this and will do so soon hopefully. I have a couple of other issues that have come up as well like condensation in both headlights even though they've never been tampered with. This also gets pretty annoying as it makes the car look not so appealing at times.

Thank you for taking initiative in resolving my ongoing issues. I will PM you later on after work with the requested information. I also want to apologize to the OP for hijacking and/or being off topic. Sure hope to get everything resolved before my warranty runs out.

Good luck in resolving your issue, JPGC and any others out there, if you do decide to take it in. Hope to see you around soon too since you're also in FL. Would love to check out your ride. [lovest]

Regards

Lol, the dealer would laugh at me if I was to take it in under warranty. I do most of the repairs, if needed, myself. Also, to be clear...the noise I'm referring too is not the gear shift klunk that some others have spoken about. Mine is a rattle as I'm shifting when I am bring my foot off of the clutch and giving it a little gas at the same time. This is while driving very conservatively. If I drive a little more aggressive or if I don't give it gas when I shift...it doesn't do it. It's more than likely clutch chatter in the the form of what boost bumps posted or a slight glaze on the clutch surface itself. I'm gonna try to get it on my go pro this weekend if it will stop storming, lol. For me...if it is the clutch/ flywheel, I will drive it for a while like that while I save for a spec clutch and flywheel or stock clutch and flywheel. I will have to decide on that :). I will do the replacement myself and maybe upgrade the diff too. We will see. For now, it's holding well and I can drive it where it won't do it. Definitely looking forward to meeting you and checking out your ride as well. Thanks.

Right on. I wish I had the resources to perform the installs and repairs myself. Hopefully I'll buy a house with a nice little garage soon. You're right though. My issue might be different than yours though... We'll see!

Well...I attempted to get the sound/ chatter on video today but, no joy. Couldn't get it to do it, lol. Here a video of the experience. BTW, I was shifting through the gears while not moving just to see if there were any strange sounds to be found on the video. There wasn't, lol

Thanks for getting back to me. I'll keep an eye out for your message. :)

All dealers are independently owned and operated, so they'll be in the best position to confirm service schedules.

I know you said you're not planning on going to your dealer for this, but if you do, let me know. :)

Hey Roger - any updates on this? I thought maybe I was hearing a little chatter on some lazy shifts where I ride out the clutch too long. Similar to what you were experiencing? Did you ever replicate it again?

I can replicate it if I try. I started pulling my foot off the clutch a little quicker and it doesn't do it. Even when it does do it, it's not bad and barely noticeable...as I can only hear it with the radio and hvac completely off. Sometimes I shift a little lazy, lol. I'm not concerned about it really. If it get worse in the future, I will just have to speed up my plan to upgrade the clutch and flywheel. I plan on doing that anyhow at some point.

Sounds like our noises are the exact same. I only notice my chatter when I am lazy and really paying attention (no music, windows up, etc.). Do you also have the 'click' or 'clunk' or 'thunk' when shifting from 1-2 and 2-3?

I've always had that delayed clunk when shifting slow 1-2,2-3. I don't even notice that anymore.
