Sound difference with drop in filter?

Just wondering if you can hear a sound difference with a drop in filter turbo spool or BPV sound at all? I would like to get a little of my turbo sound but have to keep the car civilized for my wife.

I swear I'm sitting with a mod bargians shopping cart open staring at an AP and filter... Not supposed to mod it until I've sold my other car.. Damn

It's noticeable, especially with the windows down. Not obnoxious, just noticeable. Though I've had coworkers say they can hear me across the parking lot.

good to hear. I'm done with crazy modding of cars and need to keep the car civilized for the wife to drive. a full intake is not really an option since it would bee too loud for her. A little more turbo and BPV noise however would be a nice touch. From what I can gather this car on the stock turbo dose not really need any more than a drop in filter and maybe a hole near the snorkel inlet like in the modbargins article to make power.

To further what the others have said, yes, you can hear a little bit more turbo and BPV. It's subtle enough that we car lovers and daily drivers would notice it, but no one else would.

Just got my AP and filter from Modbargains last week. No regrets. Though I kind of wish I had just added the RMM to the package.

with the price deal from mod bargains adding the mount later still puts you at the same price as buying it separate. are you getting a clunk from the stock mount not being up to the task?

I will add to everyone saying it does add turbo and BPV noise. Just enough to let everyone know it's there but not enough to draw attention from around the block. I use it when people piss me off. Give them a little "wheeeee pssshh."

No. You don't need to tune for a full intake either, it's just to get the most power from a full intake, a tune can take full advantage of it. It's not like Subarus where they get all weird when you change anything except the cat-back.

Dosn't seem like an aftermarket intake is really needed if they are still using the stock air box and the stock intake tract dose not seem very restrictive. I know that those systems flow 30%+ more than the stock pipes but is the motor limited by the stock plumbing is the real question. if so one might be able to simply get the mountune tube and call it a day after the drop in filter. are there sensor to log this on the AP?

Seems to me on this car after a drop in air filter your pretty much good on the stock turbo unless someone has data to show otherwise.

I'm stage 3 without an intake, and I get the same numbers with the paper filter as I do the drop-in. There are others with significantly more power that have only swapped out the intercooler and run a good tune on an E mixture. The only parts that should be changed for power are the FMIC, downpipe, and tune-everything else is either for show, sound, or big-turbo prep.

Good to hear. I do want a little sound so I will probably do a drop in filter. The question is do I do the filter strait away or wait till I can afford the AP. I swear I stared at the shopping cart with the stage 1 in it fo like 20 minutes but the the fear of what my wife would say when it arrived was too powerful. It was easy when parts where arriving all the time for the miata but now I have the new car so she would be on to me. Better get that Miata and accessories sold off so I can get an AP and intercooler

I have the Mountune/Green drop-in filter and made a modification to my stock air box.
Fiesta ST modifications by Bryan Redeker BRGT350, on Flickr

I added a velocity stack on the side of the lower air box to pull air just behind the headlight, above the frame rail. Doing this made a big difference in the sound coming from the intake, both intake roar (acceleration and load) and the by pass valve. The filter by itself made little difference in sound. As for performance differences, I am not sure. The filter was installed within about an hour of taking delivery of the car and the velocity stack were added a few days later.

I just installed a K&N drop in on my 2015. Inside it sounds the same but when you open the window you can hear the turbo spool and the bypass valve open. Its not intrusive at all and with the windows down makes it a whole lot more fun.
