Better MPG with Blizzaks

I have been checking my mpg with the 185/60/15 Blizzaks and see a noticeable increase. I have been averaging 32.5mpg with those tires in crappy winter weather. I also noticed how heavy the stock rims and tires are compared to my cheap alloys and Blizzaks. New lighter rims help mpg or effect handling adversely.

That's a good observation. Nice to know. Is it because they are slightly larger in diameter?

That's a valid point. Has anyone weighed the stock tire-rim assembly yet? The cheapest alloy (MSW) with 15" blizzak that I got from tirerack weighs 38 lbs.

That's an additional 28 lbs of unsprung mass then - approx 1% of curb weight. Overall, I don't think it would make a massive difference in the mpg. At regular road speeds, I doubt if the handling would be that different either.

It is possible that in winters, when the average speed is lower, opportunities of spirited driving are minimal, and in general, when there are more miles on a new car, the efficiency should improve. Hard to give the entire credit to Blizzaks just yet.
