Better late than never as they say?

At last here is my Green FiST! I?ve had it for about 7 weeks and it has been a blast! My previous cars were a Mk4 Jetta, 8th Gen Civic Si (FG2) and an FR-S. If these first few weeks are any indication, this is definitely the best one yet.

I cross shopped primarily between the GTI and WRX. In the end this silly little hatchback won out, though it was a tough choice between it and the Subaru.

Like many of us I couldn?t find what I wanted on the lot, or any lot within 500 miles for that matter, so I ordered. I placed mine through Ted Britt Ford in Fairfax, VA. Had a great experience with them, ask for Bernie, he is the man!

I only wanted two options. Green and Recaros. I had seen a picture a few years back of Gotta Have it Green on a Mustang, and thought it was a really cool color. After studying hundreds of pictures of Fiestas, I decided that although white and silver were the most handsome, the green had won my heart over. It?s a ridiculous color for a ridiculous car. As far as Recaros, I was very wishy washy as my first impression wasn?t favorable. I figured if I did not like them, there was bound to be someone who would take them off my hands. Long story short, I am very glad I ordered them.

No crazy plans as of yet. Probably some of the usual powertrain mods and perhaps a few small cosmetic or functional changes. So far the only noteworthy addition is a small Kenwood under the seat sub.

Friend, family, and coworker reactions have been entertaining to say the least and run the spectrum, though I have been surprised at the people who ultimately admit they kinda like it. As for me, I'm hooked.

Here are some personal ?Achievements Unlocked? just for fun?

First Hatchback
First ?Domestic? Car
First Powertrain that isn?t a N/A 2.0
Lightest Car
Least Expensive Car (adjusted for inflation, still close even not adjusted)
Second car assembled in Mexico
First non-neutral color :p

It's lovely. And it's nice to hear that between the FR-S and this, you seem to getting more joy factor from the little escape pod. I cross shopped both. It was a difficult decision, but ultimately I think I did better with the ST.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome, and I'm glad you all enjoyed the pictures. Was a bit nerve wracking trying to find a decent overlook before the sun disappeared.

The FR-S is a strange case. Most of the car is terrific, however that power plant is kinda awful all things considered. Sure, it isn't a powerful car, but neither was my old Civic. The problems lie elsewhere. The engine in the FA20 is just a weird combo of modest at best low end, absent midrange, mediocre horsepower up top, lumpy power delivery overall, finicky power output based on environmental conditions, forgettable sound, below average reliability, and a very expensive upgrade path.

As far as the rest of the car, it is quite good in that it is a capable instrument, but that is really all it felt like to me. An instrument. It doesn't care about its performance, it is totally uninvested, it feels like everything is on you for better or worse from the actual driving to the enjoyment. To be sure, there are other tail happy sports cars that you could argue are uninvested in your plight to not wind up in a ditch or around a tree(S2000, Elise, etc), but at least they don't have boring mediocre engines. What you're left with is not just a car that you have to work hard at getting it to do something correctly, but a car that you have to work hard at getting to do anything of interest at all. That's ok sometimes, but for a daily driver, sometimes that work just feels like, well, work. At any rate I want a car that at least feels like it is partaking in the experience, one that wants to have fun with you. RegularCarReviews's allegory about the FiST is fairly representative. The car feels like it wants to have fun. The FR-S doesn't want to have fun with you, you just have to have fun with it.

Aside from the slightly better steering feel and razor sharp turn in of the FR-S, there isn't really anything I miss.

Thats pretty much why I traded in my FRS for the FiST and first thing I thought while driving the FiST is if this motor had been in the FRS maybe I would have kept it.. And that was the last I thought of the FRS....

Flawlessly put and written with style.

You know, I am a former Oppositelock commenter, and Jalopnik FP by extension, and I remember oh my god the HYPE over the FRS all throughout the dev-stage up to the release. Man, you could cut it with a knife and it would bleed the second Christ's rocking horse shit.

And then the reality hit. It was an extremely capable appliance. Burdened, and perhaps even made more appliancy, by the result of mutual comparative handjobs between the executives in charge of engine development at ToMoCo and Fuji. Meanwhile the ST just snuck in and ate all the cookies with a shit eating grin on it's face.

I often think that with a better consideration for eager-to-please, in the same vein as the 1.4T from FCA (Which I love, adore, and always will--pinnacle of small engine soul that one), or even something like our little 1.6 Sigma, that car would have been a gem. Imagine a Fiat sourced 2.0 flat four wrapped in the BRZ? All the soul to drive you from Turin to Tokyo and snap and crackle all the while.

Funny thing is that it'll be a classic and make it back into appreciation territory before our grandkids are old enough to drive.

Thanks again everyone for the compliments.

Also well put, haha. I'd love to drive the twins with an assortment of engines to see which one fit best but I suspect you're right. A screaming little turbocharged Italian engine would be too much. :D I truly wouldn't care even if I was going slow.

Of many modern automotive "if only"ies. The 86 propelled with the same motivation and sound as the Abarth... https://youtu.be/wfQ73shGGoc

It would be a time machine of a car, just with modern refinement and a little torque to boot.

Maybe Mazda just needs to shove that engine in the Miata, or FCA needs to bring us a damn roadster or coupe. Dear god just think of it...

I almost considered the Abarth but at the end of the day, for an only car DD, there simply is such a thing as 'too small.'

Welcome! Skyline?
Sure is. Hard to beat the views. Even harder to keep it under 40... *sigh*
