Considering...

I'm considering a new ST. Of course , you're all going to say -"GET ONE"!!!

I'm wondering what people like & didn't like about their ST. Any reasons count.

I currently drive a 2014 Toyota Corolla, and it's perfectly fine. Not much fun, but a good mode of transport.
I've had a Cordia GSR many years ago. Owning a sports car is fun!

I'm not keen to shell out more $$$ for something that won't be so practical. So - shoot me down!

Why SHOULDN'T I buy an ST?

Why should I?

(I have no intention of modifying the car, and, on rare occasions I will need to transport my 3 kids around)

I don't have any kids but I know some of the members here do.

I would venture to say the FiST may not be the best option if you need to haul around 3 of them at once, even on occasion. I'm sure it can be done, though. Maybe check out a Focus ST.

Other than that.... It's superfreakingamazing right out of the box. Good luck! [emoji106][emoji41]

To judge if you want it go test drive one. Not sure if you are suggesting or think the Fiesta ST is less practical but as for the size it is very comparable to the Corolla, just 1.5 feet less length due to the hatch versus the trunk.

The FiST is a sub-compact hatch. Which is not to shabby for cargo space in the boot but if you need more drop the seats. 3 kids (unless you need 3 car seats) will easily fit in the FiST, again similar to the Corolla. Comparing the Toyota website to the Ford one the FiST has better MPG Corolla 30/40/34 compared to FiST 32/42/36 MPG lmp.

At the end you can only be the judge they are both good cars. One is bland and get you easily for A to B. The other will entice you to go from A to Z to B just for the shear fun in driving it.

I got my car used as the prior owner said he didn't have the room needed for his kids and their toys, etc. He was saving to get a CTS-V wagon... I love this car though (no kids so can't comment there)

I guess my answer depends on how tall you and the kids are and how often you need to transport them in it. I'm also assuming it's literally just you and three kids-no one else.

The main reason that I have the FiST and not a Miata is exactly that reason-occasionally I have to transport two kids and apparently it's a 'bad idea' to stack them in the passenger seat. My eight year-old fits behind me quite well and my ten year-old can fit fine if necessary. My two teens wouldn't fit though because we're all 6' tall, but unfortunately they are not within close enough distance to make it a factor.

If it's not a daily thing then it could be perfectly doable, but you might want to all pile in one to check first. We can all go somewhere as a family if necessary, but if it's not in the shop we will always take the FoST first for the additional room. Ymmv.

Obviously you're the only one that will be able to fully answer the question, but I try to buy my cars based on the 90% rule and transporting the family/kids falls into that outside 10% so it works perfectly for me.

For a car you won't modify and will need to haul 3 kids I would suggest a focus ST.

Don't get me wrong the fiesta st is a lot of fun. More fun when you throw a few mods at it though...
And it lacks space. Especially in the back seat/trunk area. Just my .02

Honestly, if you're hauling a family around AND want to have fun, I'd actually go for a GTI, just because it's a more "adult" car, in that it's more comfortable and family friendly.

Welcome Chris! My kids are grown and gone and the wife thinks I should have a miata next, but then where would I put my guitar? As mentioned previously, the true test is to pile 'em in for a test drive. [^]

I have two younger kids, which I carry in the car from time to time but not every day. Thankfully in North America we get 5 door FiST's. If I had to deal with a 3 door then I'd be thinking twice.

As a "Dad's car" (or Mom's car) that gets used principally for commuting and the occasional kid duty its great. As a principle/only family car I'd not recommend it, depending on how far your priorities are bent towards a "fun to drive" experience for the driver vs real world/passenger livability.

Its a pretty SMALL car. Which is great. Until you want to carry more then 1 other person. Its distinctly and noticeably smaller then a Corolla, or at least our north american sedan 4 door variant. If I had to get 3 kids in the back although technically possible is a very dubious proposition. Any kid large enough not to be in a car seat x 3 won't fit very well at all. And even with my small car seat and a booster setup I have now the center position would be a no go for anyone.

I'm lucky enough that for my circumstances the FiST fits the bill perfectly; But if I had 3 kids I'd be thinking twice as much as I love driving the thing, which I most definitely do.

Thanks for all the feedback! The only negative so far seems to be the size / 3 kids.

I courier my kids around town very little. 98% of the time is just me. 2kids in the back (in child seats) & the oldest in the front.

Another thought... Tow bar available? Purely for a bike carrier, not a trailer. The roof rack option isn't the best for me as I have to cart 4 bikes sometimes. Once again, on rare occasions. Usually we drive the family X-Trail for these days out.

The Focus St is just a little too much $$$. :(

Okay- 2nd part of this thread.

What are the most practical mods? Lighting/storage/sound etc.

I'm not planning to mod at all - but there just might be some really good / simple ideas out there!

Once again, thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it. Asking the salesman is just useless! :)

Welcome! Like others here, I suggest you first test drive an ST if one is available. Then if it "passes" your initial screening, see what options are right for you...I'm not sure how the ST is equipped in Australia.

I test drove a standard model fiesta last year. It was my favourite of the small car segment. But I decided to get the Corolla for that little extra room.

Which - I don't really need.

A real ST test drive will be next. The ST is only available in the 3 door version here in Oz, however, I rarely use it for the kids. They can climb in a do up their seatbelts mostly by themselves now.

Once again - thanks for all the input. It's been a real help!
