All,

The tarry sound dampening material which is bonded to the chassis comes off pretty easily. There are 3 rectangular patches in the hatch area (one on the right (looking towards the front of the car) and two more in the spare wheel well. They weigh 10oz each.

In the rear seating area, remove the seat bottom and you'll see 3 more. The smaller patches located closer to each rear door weigh 5oz each and the larger chunk to the right of the fuel pump cover weighs 10oz.

Lastly, in the rear footwell area. There is one 10oz patch on both the driver and passenger sides.

Total free loss is 4.375 lbs, yeah at the wrong end of the car, but I'll look for ways to lighten that end too.

The only tools involved in this process were a heat gun and a very sturdy interior trim removal tool.

Ciao,

Jeff

Just a side note they are also insulating the heat from the exhaust. So you may end up hotter. @no-piston got pictures where you did yours i was also thinking of adding some in the rear for better sound.

We'll see what I end up doing when I change the exhaust.....
Yeah, that's the reason I started adding sound deadening. I originally had the MBRP exhaust and it was annoying and unbearable. The sound deadening didn't seem like it made a really huge difference with exhaust noise, but I did notice a lot less road noise right away. Its not Lexus quiet but it helped some.

Sorry no pictures unfortunately. I used a combination or Raam Mat, Boom mat, and some ensolite mat and placed them all over the truck and rear seating area, along with the rear hatch and inside the rear doors. Not sure how much weight I added but it didn't seem large enough to really worry about personally.

No worries. Going to pick some up off ebay. The odd sizes are cheap and do the whole spare well and trunk. Basically everywher i can reach with much effort in removing things.

Oh, and the little weights that attach to the front suspension.....has anyone noticed any ill effects from removing them?

I found some weights on the insides of my wheels. I removed them, because its rotating mass, and wow... The car keeps getting faster and faster because the reduced wheel weight has resulted in other parts falling off the car !! If it falls off, I didn't need it anyway :) lol

I remember removing the tar sound deadening stuff, and all the insulation under the carpet on my '89 LX hatch - saved about 40 lbs, but the car was so loud.

For the Fiesta, I just ordered a space saver spare off Ebay for $60 shipped - should save more than the 4 lbs, and I can lower my center of gravity by moving the trunk floor to the lower level ;)

Hmmm, rotational weight loss - brilliant! I'll just remove 2 lugnuts per wheel ;)

I think they're primary purpose is sound reduction. I agree that a couple of the pieces are located directly above exhaust piping, but the areas where the exhaust comes closest to the chassis are shielded w/ aluminum.
