Thoughts on 17x7.5 Wheels wrapped in 225/45/17 tires

Hey guys,

Thank you for the time and responses in advanced. I am in the market for a wheel upgrade along with needing new tires. My car is a dd that sees some pretty spirited canyon driving on the weekends. I am pretty set on 17X7.5 for wheel sizing because I want them to fit under the stock fenders along with accounting for the Eibach pros springs that I have yet to install. As for tires, I was thinking 225/45/17 to maintain the stock sidewall stretch. Where you guys can help is educating me on where the butter zone is for wheels that are as light as possible for this size without breaking the bank.

225/45 on a 17x7.5 will fit much larger than stock. They have almost a 20mm taller sidewall and that size tire will actually be much more squared and borderline pinched. I had an occasional rub with 215/45 (5mm shorter sidewall than 225/45) on eibach springs so those tires will be too large. 215/40 would be the tire size I'd recommend.

I ran 16x7 et35 with a 225/45/16 tire size on stock suspension this past summer. I rubbed only on aggressive bumps/dips in the road. You will definitely be rubbing a lot with that aggressive of a setup.

If I brought the sidewall down to 40 or 35 would that help enough?
A 225/40/17 would be much better, it's basically identical to 225/45/16. I can't guarantee fitment since I'm not lowered yet, I've got a box of ST Coilovers in my garage still waiting to put on.

225 in real measurements is a bit too wide for a 7.5" rim but you need to look at the actual specs per tire, not general specs posted on websites or by the manufacturers to be sure as there can be significant variances in reality.

Best to stick with 205 or at the most 215 but look at the diameter and the offset of the wheels, it all adds up and we only have so much room under this little hot ass hatch:)

-------------

On another note, what do you want from the tires?

Ultimate cornering grip for street, track, autocross, drag racing?

How long do they need to last?

How much power are you making or plan to make?

How much will the offset effect the suspension geometry?

Picking wheels and tires is the single most important aspect of modding a car as it is the only link to the ground we have so take your time and do it right for your needs;)
