Hard Acceleration and almost did the money shift.....

Hi. So the highway and onramp was clear so I thought I'd make a hard acceleration. Well, when I was shifting from 2 to 3, I went back to 1 by mistake. There was a banging noise and the engine screamed but I caught it in time. This is about the 4th time this has happened.

My question: does the engine move during hard acceleration, and that's making me miss the shifts? If such is the case, I guess a stiffer motor mount solve the problem.

Or do I just need more practice?

ps: I do have the Mountune short shift kit. I have also found that 3rd gear is more to the right than I'm used to.

Get a RMM either way.
But I run the A/C almost all the time [unbelieveable].

The Cobb is most conservative yes? I think I'd like to find a used one. They do break in don't they? If so, anyone looking to sell theirs?

btw, thanks to all for your input.

Yes Cobb mount it's virtually the same as stock. You will barely notice it.
I did a 2-1 shift at the drag strip and broke the passenger side mount so keep an eye out for that as well

i go 1-2 hard on shifter but smooth on clutch, 2-3 i take an extra .25 sec to make sure the shift was done proper then flat out 3-4. all in all the only thing ive done so far is clutch out a little early a couple of times and "GRRRRR" then i clutch back in quick and finish the shift smoothly. also changed my xmsn fluid to Royal purple syncromax, it works well but takes a bit more time to smooth out in the cold months.

I notice no difference with the Cobb RMM vs stock. Granted I came from a Boomba RMM, which outperforms (less engine movement, less wheel hop, better shift feel) the Cobb but def has the vibes. I hear the Mountune RMM is a tad bit softer than the Cobb.

All these RMMs will break in.

Boomba mount I'd say is a very quality piece I've had mine in for about 500 miles....definitely has broken in some I will say that. The cold weather here in Mn. But I'd buy it all over again if I had the choice.

A good RMM and a short throw shifter along with a trans fluid change will help to make this a non-issue!

I'm sorry, but I don't see how a SS and RMM will cure a 1-2-1 shift issue. Please explain.
It takes the slop out of everything making the shifting tighter and more precise. I have the Boomba shift gear and tranny cable bushing kits along with their short shift plate and let me tell you it's night and day. I did my research and only drove the car about 300mi. before swapping the OEM stuff out. If not interested in shorter throws just get the bushings and a RMM (I have Cobb) you will not regret it and definitely no more 1-2-1.

The 1-2-1 shift happens for a couple of different reasons. It can happen from the excessive movement of the drive-train due to soft factory rear motor mount and it can also happen from the vague feeling you get shifting through gears.

Upgrading your rear motor mount will help to prevent mis-shifting because the car will have significantly less drivetrain movement. When you go to shift gears with an aftermarket mount such as ours, your entire engine/trans assembly is not rocking in the same crazy motion is would have when it was stock. This can be demonstrated here:

When you upgrade to a short throw shifter, shifting becomes a little more notchy and mechanical feeling. This means that shifting is not as vague anymore and you now have a much better feel and idea what gear you are shifting into due to the increased feedback you'd now be getting through the shifter.

I hope that clears it up a little. If you've got further questions, let us know!

All, I guess after 3 glasses of wine, I wasn't really asking the right question. I roger that an improved RMM does wonders to cure many things with only minimal increase in NVH. I also understand that a short shifter, by design reduces the shift throw in trade for increase effort. Having those two item installed together work to mitigate the 1-2-1 shift problem. What I don't understand is why the transmission allows the gearshift to "gate" to a lower gear during hard acceleration. Aren't there synchros which (I thought) are installed to prevent human error from destroying a stock drivetrain due to inadvertent gear selection? Most cars I've owned wouldn't allow me to shift into a lower gear without rev matching.

The synchros are not there to prevent human error in gear selection. They take away the need to double clutch when shifting by helping to "synchronize" the gears. If you've ever driving a non synchro gear (crash box) tranny you'll know how much they help to keep the gears from grinding.

Well, I just ordered the Cobb RMM to take out some of the slop. Kyle from Cobb says I would notice a bit of vibration only if I looked for it. I also looked at their YouTube showing the motions on the instrument panel with the AC off and the AC on. Opinions regarding the NVH on the Cobb vary all across the board. He said if I'm not happy with it, I could return it for a full refund. Plus, I have service points with my dealer so it wouldn't cost me if I didn't like it. I'll post my review of it here once it arrives and is installed.

Gotcha. It does seem odd that the last BMW, 2 MINI Coopers, my Shelby won't go into first gear easily at speed above 15-20MPH. On a whim at lunch while driving home, I easily shifted the FiST into first at over 25MPH - scary. Now that I'm thinking of it, my daughters did the 3-4-3 thing a couple of times while I she visited last month. I've never missed a shift, but I have the stock RMM and get on the gas hard AFTER a shift and don't generally push the drive train too hard. Remember, I'm over here w/o a local Ford dealer, and am not certain how well I'd be received with a US spec car, regardless of what MAS (Military Auto Source) states to ease my concerns. A RMM is likely my next purchase, while I sell plasma to afford a DHM 290R kit.....

Mine refuses to go into first unless I'm nearly stopped or I rev match. Of course, I don't try to jam through the heavy resistance or anything, but it's odd that I seem to be the only one in this thread with a FiST that does this. I've had the Boomba RMM since around 3k miles (at 12k now) and still have the stock shifter.

So your car's transmission more or less functions properly.....that is the way I'd expect any car to shift. There should be a "decent" amount of resistance to prevent inadvertent shifting to a lower gear.
