Inexpensive Alternative Intake, the "joker96 intake"

I haven't seen this approach much out there, so I thought I'd share.

Most of us are getting intakes for the sound more than anything else. While there are a handful that help power, most just sound cool and pull engine bay air. In that spirit I decided to go as economical as I could. A good amount of searching landed me on this thread on another forum by user "joker96" who basically found a company in the UK that made a MAF adapter for our cars. Slap a filter on and you've functionally got the same intake you can get elsewhere for hundreds of dollars, but perhaps without the shroud which appears to be of dubious helpfulness on some iterations.

The adapter for me was about $55 shipped to the US, a little pricey but I was willing to pay for a part specifically made to fit our cars. After that put just about any 70mm (2.75") filter on the end and you're in business. I went with a AEM 21-202DK, I wouldn't recommend exceeding its dimensions much as it is already about the right size.

Filter I opted to use: http://www.aemintakes.com/search/product.aspx?prod=21-202dk

Some pictures...

The only permanent mod you must make is to trim this piece of rubber off the hose as you can see it interferes with the maf housing. It doesn't effect function, it is only designed to help you line up the intake tube to the stock air box, but it is obvious how they go together anyway and it is not likely anyone would notice the change.

Like it was never even there...

You can get the sound at much lower price this route. In addition you can swap back and forth between the stock intake in less than 5 minutes for those of you with warranty or inspection concerns. Feel free to share your thoughts or let me know if you have questions.

Sooo...did YOU do it just for the noise,or are you getting any benefits? (serious question)

Dang. Just begrudgingly ordered a legit one yesterday for too much money... In it just for the noise as well. Good write up nonetheless!

I would have to assume it is the same as any other engine bay intake that doesn't make serious efforts to isolate itself from engine heat. (Injen for example) That is to say, almost certainly no performance benefit, if anything a negligible decrease in performance since it isn't true cold air anymore.

I did it for the sound personally.

Did you make a brace for it?

I picked up one of those and a cheap filter w/ a mountune intake tube a while back in order to make my own intake, but haven't had a chance to do it yet.

No, I didn't feel a need given how rigid the stock tubing is. My only fitment concern with the filter I chose is it will potentially rub against the mount for the hood stand, but a small piece of plastic glued to the filter fixes that. If someone chose a slight shorter and maybe wider filter this probably wouldn't be a concern at all. Joker96 used a very small filter that is sure to have no fitment issues, but I worry it might be less efficient.

If I was to source an additional part it would probably be a combination mount/shroud, or perhaps order one of the existing ones if they could be had for cheap. I kind of doubt that would be an option but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I'm getting way too excited about this lol, but for those baller enough, K&N's Apollo "closed" air intake and a silicone hose would make a great DIY intake.

Oh, and I stumbled upon this http://www.ebay.com/itm/271854435160?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT going to give it a try, $16 bucks isn't bad if it doesn't fit but it's just metal so probably can make it work. Just something to shield it from underbody wash jets. Yes this is getting kinda rice [tongue]. There's also an Injen heat/splash shield HS5000P or HS5000BLK if a brand name is required [like].

Oh wow that would make for a really cool setup.

I am interested to see how that metal shield you found works out. If you're concerned about aesthetics grab some wrinkle black spray paint and it should look pretty good! Do keep us updated!

I doubt there's any gains without a tune TBH. As I did not expect any, and if there are, it will be within the margin of error with a vdyno, I did not take any base readings.

That said, here are the temperatures on the commute home from work.

So for those interested, here's the temperatures in Celsius.

Ambient 13-14c

Bumper to bumper rush hour below 20 kph for 2.5km

IAT: 43c max reading CAT: 22c max reading

Freeway speeds 100kph limit, going @ the rate of traffic wink wink

IAT: 18-22c CAT: 17-19c

Local surface street with traffic lights 50kph limit @ rate of traffic

IAT: 20-23c CAT: 19-21c

Hey guys,

I've done this exact set-up with a green filter. working perfectly. However, I hated how it could move around so much. So, I've currently zip-tied my intake to the battery casing and that's working really well as my intake doesn't move now. This is just a temp solution as I would like to see if anyone has found or made a support bracket that could fit into the existing airbox holes. I love my zip-tie handy work but I'd like something that is a bit more of a cleaner look.

Also, I'd love to share the picture I just took so everyone could see what I've done but I don't know how to add a photo. I'm new to the forums and posting comments.
