Cobb AP vs. Mountune AP vs Mountune MP215/230

I apologize in advance if this has been covered to death, but I just want to make sure I'm clear, and I haven't seen these all compared in one place.

I plan to mod my FiST in about 6 months (assuming I actually get it, ordered late January and still waiting, arg) and want to be clear what my options are.

I had an 04 WRX (the last car I bought new, April 03) and got an v1 Accessport, went from Stage 1 to 2 (w/DP, etc.) on it and it was great. Waited til my car had 80K or so on the clock. This was 2006-7.

Here's my understanding of the various options:

1. Cobb AP: Technically voids warranty, but gives maximum flexibility w OTS/custom tunes, etc.
2. Mountune: AP Same as above, but you get a free custom tune (a VERY attractive feature), perhaps a few more $?
3. Mountune MP215/230: Basically locks you in to a specific tune forever but keeps warranty intact

I'm sure I'm missing something significant....anybody?

mp215 is warranty friendly, MR230 is NOT. Buying the AP from mountune can be cheaper (including the etune) if you use a coupon which can be had by emailing them or signing up and leaving it in your cart for a day or so.

I went from cobb ap -> mp215 -> mountune ap because I thought I would stay warranty friendly but then got the itch.

I purchased my AP from Mountune because it includes their Stage 1 OTS map with custom settings of your choosing PLUS free modifications of your map anytime within 45 days of purchase.

I got 15% off with the coupon code "mountune rewards." All in all I ended up paying $432 with priority shipping. Well worth it, in my opinion, and Randy is awesome to talk to if you have questions or concerns.

You can also get the AP with a custom map from MAPerformance but they won't allow discount of the AP with a coupon code.

To each their own, but I feel like buying the AP from Cobb directly is a waste of money. You get the AP and their canned OTS maps and that's it. You buy from Mountune you pay pretty much the same thing, you get a more custom stage 1 map with some parameters set as you like them, plus you get 45 days of data log submissions for tweaks done, at no additional cost, based on your real car and logs by Randy and crew. On top of that, you can still get Cobb's OTS maps from Cobb, load them to the AP and flash them to your car if you so choose.

You really lose nothing by buying the AP from Mountune and only gain things as best I can tell.

http://www.cobbtuning.com/products/accessport/ford-accessport-v3 = $500
http://www.mountuneusa.com/COBB-V3-Accessport-ECU-Flasher-Focus-ST-Fiesta-ST-p/ap3-for-001.htm = the same $500

Does anyone have a dyno chart of what the custom tune from mountune looks like with just drop in filter & catback?

On their site on the product page for the AP is a dyno chart showing an OEM run and then a tuned run. Neither the drop-in or catback will add much power so what they posted will be your best bet.

I'm very happy with the Cobb as a first tune, it really corrects the power band to give you more umph exactly where it's needed... That said I still can't wait to try the Stratified! I picked up the AP used with only the Cobb tunes and a Mountune drop in... Even if it doesn't provide much gains, it's very thin compared to the stock so it does add a bit of sound/turbo noise, goes along with the tune quite well.

I have the Stratified flash and it's noticeably quicker everywhere than the Cobb OTS 1 and 2. Very happy with it. Before you purchase the Stratified tune, look into JST or Dizzy. Both great tuners as well that aren't quite as backed up.

Yes, I'm definitely considering any tuner that's any good, I know that the Cobb is pretty conservative but also doesn't get enough credit for how well it corrects the powerband and adds good power down low with no loss at the top. I've seen video's comparing the Cobb and Stratified and it's clear Stratified is quicker, but who is this JST you speak of? I'm trying to get as many options together as possible to compare, but for now Dizzy and Stratified is at the top of the list...

I don't think JST is active on this forum, but they are pretty popular on the Facebook groups. Based out of Atlanta I believe.

How backed up is Stratified? Did you speak with Alex in the last couple of days and did he say how long it takes to get a tune once you submit the tuning form with all parts completed properly? When I did my tune a few months ago, I received it the day after I sent in the form. I am very happy with my Stratified single combo file tune, but I have no experience with Dizzy, although Jason seems to be building an excellent reputation here, just like Stratified has enjoyed as long as I have been here. Also, I think the Dizzy tune includes a datalog review, making it a true custom option. I will say this--if you decide you prefer a particular tuner, I think you are making a big mistake if you go in a different direction because you have to wait a few days to get a tune from your first choice.

I just meant to look into other options to have options as they all are good. I have had great experience and turn around with Stratified as well, but have heard plenty of people say otherwise so I just offering advice from both perspective.

In case anyone is wondering. Here are my results on a dynapack running a custom Mountune calibration from Randy.

Mods: induction hose paired with panel filter and catback.
