Question about Turbo Over Spooling

I would first like to apologize for my lack of mechanical expertise on all this. So anyways bought my FiST and right off the bat slapped Cobb Stage 1 and MBRP 3in CBE on it.

It's been fun but I am ready to move up to stage 2 and have really been eyeing Deadhooks intercooler and DP. My concern is will this mixture of 3in exhaust and de-catted DP cause overspool issues due to the lack of back pressure in the engine? or am I just crazy and don't know what I am talking about? Any input would be helpful before I decide to pull the trigger on this.

Thanks!

On the stock turbo neither the 3" exhaust or a DP will help or harm you. Some do say that on the stock turbo you will actually lose power with a 3" exhaust. Once you have a higher flowing turbo, then you will see a benefit from a larger diameter exhaust (3" is still most likely overkill on our 1.6), and an aftermarket DP has been shown to "blow it's wad" with gains so early in the rev range that it is most likely pointless to have one until after you upgrade the stock turbo.

I believe that a better flowing DP does in fact make more torque on the stock turbo, and I believe that the peak gains all happen below 4K rpms and then it offers no real benefit after that other than giving the user a big peak number to brag about.

So it sounds like I kinda wasted my $$ on the MBRP and should have stuck with something with a smaller diameter?

For what it's worth I bought an Injen 3" before I purchased the x37 uprated turbo

It's your car man, do what you want with it. I highly recomend the deadhook intercooler.

Downpipe is always up for debate on this forum. I bought a used catless downpipe and never regretted the decision.

Not so. People see SIGNIFICANT and quantifiable gains in spool and power on 1.6L Miata's w/ 3 inch exhausts vs. 2.5 inch exhausts. Like mentioned though it helps even more when you have a bigger turbo. We want as little back-pressure as possible as the turbocharger provides all the back-pressure that you need in the system.

I've been running my current setup (PLM downpipe w/CPE 3" catback) with the stock turbo and X37 and have never had an issue. You'll be fine...the ECU does a good job of keeping things in check.

I'm always surprised to see people that believe removing back pressure is somehow bad or will hurt power. The turbo is and will always be the largest obstruction in the exhaust and anything that you can do to improve its efficiency will improve its performance. You may not see a large benefit but you definitely won't see a performance reduction.

Wow, thanks for all the input guys. I really appreciate it, I think I am going to go ahead and pull the trigger on this.

And thank you frankiefiesta for the thumbs up on deadhooks FMIC it was between that and Mishimoto, but considering they have there stage 2 package with DP and intercooler for under $1000 its hard to say no :)

No problem. Get them to do an e-tune on your car and you'll really be smiling
