Before buying a new Valentine One or any other detector, read and watch the independent reviews of the Uniden R3.

I read about it but I like the arrows on the Valentine and the app. I frequent LA and OC where cops are everywhere so knowing what direction it's coming from helps vs constant generic alarms.

I have to check them out in person. I wish they made decent priced hidden radar/laser detectors. I imagine I won't get so lucky if a cop sees my detector on my dash if pulled over.

I keep mine attached via a magnet mount right above the SYNC 3 screen. Super convenient and quick to just pop off and throw in the center console if I get pulled over or want it put away for some reason.

Also, +1 on looking at Uniden. If you don't need the range of the R3, I recommend the Uniden DFR7 - it has been amazing for me and has pretty solid rear detection (although no arrows like the V1).

Short story? Crotch rocket and Being stupid on public roads.

20 years old
2006 Ducati 749 dark (when flat black was cheaper and not cool yet)
'R' upgrades, Termigioni exhaust, intake mod, re flash, other bells and whistles.

15 highway out by Mojave because I was bored and mods were new. Perfect stretch of miles open, straight road. Rode back and forth on a stretch of road for a few times as a safety sweep before I decided to see what each gear topped out at (had just upgraded gearing).

CHP was off the road in a ditch and watched me the whole time. Saw me doing low speed passes and knew I was going for it. Clocked me in at 137mph in 4th... When I saw the lights I had shifted to 5th and speedo indicated 156 and she was still pulling. Who knows how accurate that Ducs speedo really was anyways but it was really fast.

I thought about not stopping but I was in the middle of nowhere and running from the law usually only works if it's pre meditated and/or in the movies.

Cop caught up. Ordered me on the ground away from my bike, had me ditch my gear before he even approached me. Scary experience. Told me at those speeds if I "hit a tumbleweed you'd be roadkill". Didn't help that I had a CCW and had to delare my Beretta in the storage compartment. Tried to bring up how I was an Eagle Scout and all that but he wasn't having it.

Arrested for street racing (myself?) and another BS misdemeanor charge similar to reckless endangerment?, Excessive speeding, and reckless driving.

AND my parents had to pick me up about 2 hours from home. That was an awesome car ride back...

CHP made a statement saying I was cooperative and respectful. Misdemeanors we're dropped but I had to pay for towing and destruction of the bike. And my motorcycle license was suspended for 4 years.

Never again. I was being really dumb. Still sad I never got to see that vehicles top speed but the road is NOT the place to do it. I'm happy I didn't hurt anyone or myself.

That is crazy! I’m suprised he arrested you after seeing you check the place out. I’ve never actually gotten a ticket on a motorcycle over my many years of riding(but have gotten a bunch of warnings). The track is a much safer and more fun place to test out speed but I would be lying if I said I haven’t done the same thing myself a few times. Sorry that you had to learn the hard way, and lose your bike! That’s unheard of around here.

in Ca, speed checked by radar freeway sign, they can use them, but if not, they have to track you the old fashion way. you gotta give it to the C.H.P. they are good. i drive oversize loads that require permit's C.H.P., city cops, sheriffs. they all want you to have all their permits and be on route. and they always check me sometimes 3 or 4 times a load. one thing wrong and the whole permit is void and that can be a $10,000 fine and they would love to get that kind of money from me. needless to say you gotta have a lawyer and they aint $75. height, well that's a big one and don't screw that one up. width, i have my biggest problem with other truckers that don't let you move over, and more and more this is a problem for me. most of the L.E.O.'s are nice family guy's but every dept. has a Barney Fife and if you get him your on your own. when i move Dept. of Defense stuff they pretty much leave me alone. even Barney.

I just re-read this thread and the post quoted above. As a Ducati owner it is unreal to me that California would confiscate and destroy your bike. I love the weather and roads in Ca., but I could not live there. I am confused about one thing though. In your post you say you were 20 years old. And you also said you had a CCW and you were carrying your Beretta. How is that possible? [???:)]

The gun was transferred to my name by a family member. I'm not sure about now, but the minimum age for a CCW/LTC was 18 when I applied (you have to be 21 to purchase a handgun, 18 to possess or own). I had good reason to carry at the time, am an Eagle Scout and have references in law enforcement. It was not a walk in the park and takes a bit of time to get which I'm glad for. I believe sane, responsible people can have guns, but not everyone.

As for the BS street racing law, Los Angeles temporarily passed a law that they could even seize spectator's cars at illegal street races. The laws were meant to target racing with injuries, fatalities or property damage, but the loose language allows many counties able to deem speeding as 'racing'. I'm all for enforcing consequences of illegal activity, but seizing personal property is rather tyrannical. Gotta love socialism....

Seizing personal property has nothing to do with socialism.

Yes, actually the NAZIS, EXTREME FASCISTS who were the exact diametrical OPPOSITE OF 'socialists' (despite that term being contained in their name) were notorious for seizing ALL of the property/wealth/assets of those they incarcerated, and then BUTCHERED for the 'crime' of being the 'wrong'; religion, 'race', or worldview from them. [mad]

Bummer. Mine is $421 including traffic school. Definitely stoked he wrote me down as '90+' mph instead of my actual speed.

My next mods will be stereo, redo tint, wheels before anymore go fast bits.

Yikes. I'll have to wait a few days to see what the damage is but I feel you on the mods, haha.

I was amazed at how quickly he got me and the speed at which I was actually going. I had just shifted to third and gave it a bit of gas but I was coming around a mild turn down a steeper-than-expected hill in an area I hadn't been before---I swear that's the only time they ever get you. I was already on the brakes when he, coming from the opposite direction, lit the lamps. I'm sure I would have been perfectly fine if I had just coasted after third. Woops. Frankly, I think after driving Miatas for years I'm still not used to the acceleration that comes from even a small amount of boost. Throw going downhill into the mix and it gets away a little faster than I realize at times.

If you've been driving without protection, (as you seem to have been) a VERY GOOD radar detector should be your next purchase. The policeman was cruising with his radar on, otherwise he wouldn't have gotten you at all. You would have known he was out there before you ever entered the sweeper.

AND... I too have a miata, and when driving it, miss the punch of the FiST.

Indeed, I'll look into it.
