My next car will either be a wrx, V60 polestar wagon, or an RS. The FiST will be my “toy”

The GTI is a fantastic car and my 2010 didn't really give me any headaches except a noisy throwout bearing that didn't get replaced under warranty. I would definitely buy another one (the DSG maint every 40k is irritating, but it's every 40k so not that frequent), but the cost is a turn off. In VA we have personal property taxes, so every year I have to pay tax based off vehicle assessed value just to own it. I'm glad my 15' FiST reflects like 12k so at least it's only a couple hundred bucks. People I know who bought 30k plus cars are having to pay 600+ every year just to have it.

My R53 was an 06' with fairly low miles on it. I replaced all kinds of things, engine mounts, pulley tensioner, control arm bushings, etc. I even did tons of preventative maintenance far before it was due and I didn't really beat on it too much... but still ended up finding oil in my coolant tank which was pointing toward a leaking headgasket. It was such a downer, but a ridiculously fun car at the same time.
Yeah...With my last new car, the great state of Connecticut sent me $1000 tax bill every year for the privilege of parking my own car in my driveway/garage. Incidentally, the driveway/garage that it was parked in also gets a nice fat tax bill...Ugh.

In any case, I'll probably go back to Subaru, provided that they don't decide to ditch turbocharging and manual transmissions. I would be interested in a 2 door Bronco, there's some interesting teasers floating around on that, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I am keeping my FiST forever. It will be payed off next year. At that time I will get a new daily which will be a small suv or a mid size truck. I will definitely be looking at the new Ranger. Once that is paid off probably another toy. Maybe a Mustang GT. We will see.

I'll tell ya, everyone and their great grand auntie HATES ON those, but the Premium hatch manual RS I could actually live with (the silver looks pretty good to me), especially if the Bowtie dealers would drop the price to under $16K. [thumb]

One of those was the ONLY other new car I was even considering along with the FiST, and I was pretty surprised to be as impressed as I was with it on the short test drive I did with one. ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the "RS" badge on those doesn't actually mean anything. It's an appearance package and maybe a slight ride height drop. Now, if Chevy made an honest to God hot hatch version of the Sonic I'd absolutely consider it, may actually be the top of the list since it would be the same size as the FiST. Wouldn't it be funny if Chevy sees Ford's move here and pulls a bunch of SS hot hatches out of their pocket?

You might not be too far off. I read this morning a statement from GM that see this as an opportunity to take car buyers that used to buy Fords. I hope they do, I hope a lot of companies gain while Ford loses. Sadly, I doubt that will be the case as the market has shifted too far. Also, Wall Street loved what Ford did. Analysts and traders gain huge support for Ford's plan to kill cars. When GM and FCA see that, they will accelerate plans to do the same. The day when Tesla became more valuable than Ford and GM, investors demanded faster change.

If I was GM, I would capitalize on this move and pick up those Ford car buyers. Knowing that investors want out of cars, I would then launch a plan at a quarterly meeting to announce a retirement plan for cars in a phased approach over time. Ford has a phased approach to killing all cars, but that isn't what made headlines. Ford makes it sound like all cars end today, when in fact it will take a few years. Wall Street loved it, but consumers didn't.

According to a report, the Focus will exit next month, Fiesta in May 2019, and no date on the Fusion. Nobody cares when the Taurus and C-Max end.

I think the GM RS does mean Rally Sport and SS is Super Sport, based upon their creation in the mid-1960's. The Zxx designation was the performance option code back in the day. Z06, Z28, ect.

As I do start to look around for what to do next, I realize how good of a value the Fiesta ST is. Try finding a hatchback with 200hp, supportive seats, a manual transmission, and priced under $30k.
I just urged my son to buy a new Trendline Golf 5 dr. Conservatively rated at 170 hp. The TSi 1.8 is a turbo GDI.
The salesperson said to use regular gas, there is no point in using premium.

Common sense says these cars should be as tunable as the Fist; research finds 93 premium yields over 191 hp at the wheels! A $299 tuner will give you another 32 hp; $599 will give you 48 hp over stock. Now you're in GTI territory!

Our car is $30K Canadian up here, his was just over $20K; think of the killer little sleeper you could build if you put the equivalent cost of a GTI into it. Complete tires, wheels, suspension and full bolt-ons.

There are alternatives!

That's a great point. I hadn't even thought about a non-GTI Golf as an option. Looking at their site, I didn't realize you can get the Golf SportWagon with AWD, the 1.8L Turbo, AND a 6-speed manual, all for around 25k. That's not a bad deal at all, and I have an odd soft spot for wagons. The old Mazda6 wagons give me strange feelings of pleasure whenever I see them.

Golf R is the logical step up from the FIST (excluding price)

Similar size, very tuneable, handles well, etc.

Honestly the ST's/RS might become a collectors item in a few years if Ford keeps this route up.

Here's hoping Chevy and Dodge get their acts together

Too bad the reliability issues of the Golf R. Amazing cars but I don't want to second guess reliability after modding, hard driving or taking it on long trips.

Was shopping Golf Rs and FoRS before even considering a FiST.

Honestly, I'm surprised no one's mentioned Lotus. Too stripped down for a daily?

YES, it IS basically an appearance package, but one which DOES improve somewhat upon the 'low end rental car looks' of the base Sonic, and when combined with the 1.4 TGDI and a (6 cog) manual makes it at least decent. ;)

Although, in a purist sense of the term 'sleeper', the wheels/tires needed to accomplish this would belie the stealth, especially given just how sedate in outward appearance the GTI/R are themselves as compared to the base Golf.

They are getting their act together and already starting the process to kill of cars. GM started with Caddy and Chevy is in process. Chrysler/Dodge started this when they killed the 200/Dart. Ford saw how FCA was rewarded for ditching cars. Then Ford saw how Jeep continually outperforms the rest of the FCA brands. Ford's stock jumped 2% as a result of the Q1 announcement to kill cars. GM will now accelerate the process in hopes of a similar jump in share price. By 2020, I expect there only to be about a 10% mix of cars and the rest all trucks, SUV's, and crossovers. The only cars that will be left will be the Camaro, Mustang, Corvette, the new Caddy something alphabet soup (the ATS and CTS got cut and replaced with a single model), and probably not much more. FCA is killing or has already killed the 300. It is still flopping around, but not going to make it. Charger and Challenger are on old platforms that are set to expire. I don't expect Dodge to exist much longer. Chevy has the Malibu and I don't expect that to live. I thought I read someplace that the Chevy B and C cars are planned to expire without a replacement. If you want a car, you have either European or Asian to pick from. I don't expect that to last long either.

Tbh I'll probably just hang onto my FiST until it falls apart. I've been DDing a 94 Escort for the last 5-6 years, I've got no qualms with keeping an old car alive lol.
