Simple audio upgrade ideas?

I'm not real happy with the audio system in my FiST. I've only had it a week and it might improve a little when the speakers break in a bit, but the highs are flat and the bass, what little their is, is muddy. I went to what is generally considered the best car audio shop in town, and the suggested swapping the speakers for two way speakers and calling it good. They didn't think much of an underseat sub. I'm no audiophile, I just want a decent sounding stereo with a little bit of bass. In my last car, a Jetta, I ordered a kit of direct fit speakers from Germany that sounded great, but had all kinds of rattles. I've read a bunch of previous threads, but all the talk of eq and crossovers made my head spin. What would you recommend for a simple, (Cheap is good, too!), upgrade?

I think the Sony system puts out 100 watts to 6 or 8 speakers, which needless to say is not a lot. You could *maybe* upgrade the speakers and get better sound, but they'd have to be REALLY high efficiency to make the most of the meager power output.

My $.02, throw on a quality catback exhaust, turn the radio off and listen to that sweet sweet 4 banger music!!!

Simplest and cheapest upgrade in the low end, is buying a powered sub woofer, like one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XTGYZFM/ $100
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019Z3RFGY/ $100
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019Z3R582/ $115 (slightly louder)
https://www.amazon.com/Kenwood-KSC-SW11-Compact-Enclosed-Subwoofer/dp/B00BO8O9XQ/ $140 (very small profile)

There are more, but I personally found those the most interesting ones.

Door speakers won't add a lot of volume, but I've noticed a pair, when installing these, should be a lot louder than stock:
These fosgates are supposedly wicked loud per watt:

They're about $70 per speaker though.
