My car has 650 miles right now. I've been driving it pretty hard idk if that matters. I think I read somewhere that the first oil change should be like 1500 miles? And then the normal oil change interval is 10k miles?

I did mine at 5, went to full synthetic. I might do another at 5 again and then switch to 10k intervals.

I did mine at 1,000 to get the break in oil out. I know, I know, they say you don't need to do that, but why not? then again at at 3000, just to be sure.. once every 6 months after that.. or about 5000 miles. ..

YMMV

My 2?

I agree with this^^^ since I am told that the factory oil is nothing special as far as being a higher break-in add pack type oil, like some other factory fills are claimed to be (unless this info is incorrect??), so leaving it in the sump has no added benefits as far as helpful additives goes. [wink]

I was told the same thing by Ford Performance- that the factory fill oil is the Motorcraft 5w-20 synthetic blend. I'm going to do a break-in oil change with it at 1000 miles (I'm at 450 now) then change to Mobil 1 EP, which I will change once a year or every 5k miles, whichever comes first.

Same here, as I figure you cannot go wrong with eiter the M1, or Castrol EP synthetics (unless maybe one has a stupid big power, BT setup, then I'd look into the much more stout, but NOT Ford spec/warranty friendly, 'boutique' synthetics, i.e.; Motul 300V, Red Line, Millers NT, etc., and then the warranty does not matter anyway, since you tore it up with the BT kit install).

Except that ('waste' or not) I will change it twice a year, regardless of mileage (because hot running, D.I. turbo, you know).

I am even thinking of going to a 0W/5W-30 for the late spring, summer, and early fall OCI. [wink]

Sorry if I implied that there was a difference in the oil that the factory puts in before the car is sold and what they put in on an oil change. I always assumed it was the same stuff.. I was just referring to it as "break in oil" because its in the crankcase during the break in period..... .. Since the "book" says not to run the engine at a constant speed during the first 1000 miles, I considered this the break in period, and wanted that oil gone.

I did not even think that you were implying the break-in oil was anything special, in fact I thought you were suggesting just the opposite, that it is just off the shelf, Conoco Phillips produced, Motorcraft synthetic blend oil, and is therefore nothing special, as it does NOT contain any (extra) needed break-in additives, so NO harm in changing it out EARLY (as you did)! I changed first at about 1000 miles, refilled with Motorcraft Syn Blend to complete the break-in, I am old and still think dino is best for break-in. I felt that all of the major bits and pieces were in the original oil filter and could have been reducing oil flow by then so changing it to a larger one with more surface area just seemed to be a wise move. I used the larger Ford fl400s filter. At 4500 miles I changed to Castrol GTX MAGNATEC 5W-20 Full Synthetic because I could not find the Motorcraft full Syn locally.I use 5000 miles for my changes. I can order the Kendall GT on-line delivered for $4.25 a qt. I saw a video on the titanium additive and Electron Microscope pics of the titanium filled into the iron pores. This is one of the "friction reducing" additives for new guidelines to increase fuel efficiency. I trust Ford (who trusts Phillips/Kendall) to use the best available oil and the fact that the Motorcraft/Kendall uses food grade mineral oil as the base for the synthetic oil means it starts with the purest form of dino oil. If you look at old B&W pics of 50's and 60's race tracks the fences usually had the Kendall sign with the "V" finger sign for victory, or for an old hippie like me the Peace sign!

Pick an oil you have confidence in, change it often in your FiST......and drive like you stole it![driving]

The whole oil choice is a personal thing that to most of us will never be a cause of failure if you use what Ford recommends and change it often.......I will have this car 10 years or more, I have 7500 miles on it and it is 4 months old and I have no plans on replacing an engine.

I also cut open an FL910S I replaced the factory installed filter with. After looking at the internals and materials of the factory installed filter I feel it's a better filter than the FL910S. There are more pleats and the medium looked more dense. It's physically a tad shorter in depth, but it looked like it would do a better job at containing and trapping particles from a new engine being broken in. I have no concerns having left it on for the first 5,000 miles and the oil analysis and recent emissions test confirms that.

I've been using Pennzoil Ultra 5w-20 and will be moving to Castrol Edge 0w-40 to accommodate and compliment my DHM BIG turbo set up.
