This is the new generation Civic Type R that will finally come to the US. Or at least it pretty much is. Technically this is still a prototype, and the production model will be shown early next year. However, based on Honda's recent Civic "concepts," you can rest easy knowing nothing major is going to change.

The biggest change you'll probably see is in paint finish. The concept here has been given an interesting brushed aluminum-look vinyl wrap. If you're really have to have it, there's probably a decal shop nearby that could hook you up.

Moving past that, the Type R takes the standard hatchback and adds aggression rather than lightness. The front bumper is widened with extra slats, along with the fenders front and rear. It also gets a deeper chin spoiler in bare carbon fiber with a red accent stripe. Up on the hood is the intriguing addition of a scoop. We assume it's functional, and we imagine it feeds a top-mounted intercooler like the scoops on the Subaru WRX and last Mazdaspeed3. According to rumors, the engine under the scooped hood could produce as much as 340 horsepower.

The sides of the car also get carbon fiber side skirts to go along with the front spoiler. The widened fenders accommodate fat wheels shod with 245 width tires. This leads to the back where the Type R once again receives an over-the-top rear wing, which we assume to be just as functional as the last one.

The rear of the Type R also gets one more cool feature. It has functional, triple tailpipes, just like the Ferrari 458 Italia and the F40. Honda also brought attention to the exhaust by painting the center pipe red. We don't yet know the exact purpose of the third pipe, but we're excited to find out.

As previously mentioned, this is just a "concept" and the production model will be shown early next year. After that, the Type R will be released in Europe first during the second half of 2017. US availability has not been announced yet.

I can see these beat to crap and boosted to hell in about six or seven years on the used car market by all the Honda fan boys.

The performance better match the looks, and the build quality had better live up the "R" moniker. Honda hasn't had a serious sporting car since the S2k went away, and if they want to regain any market share with so many high value options that are available today, then they better bring their A+ game.

I'm a "ex" Honda fan boy, and I admit that I am excited for this car. I will be looking for a return to the days of Honda engineering and build quality being at a high level, and I am also hoping that the car puts the power down in such a way that it outshines other cars costing more.

This is a lot to ask I know, but Honda has built the stage and it's made its bed having made everyone wait for so long. Only something truly exceptional will do at this point, and "on par" with the other options won't cut it.

With that said and if the CTR is as beastly to drive (in the best way) as it looks (not really digging it's looks), then I might have to buy one.

Probably not as bad as an Si due to the price bracket it'll be in. But do you really think our cars are going to fare any better?

I'm so glad I didn't wait on a Civic Si/Type R... Honda's styling is just something I can't stomach these days.

I say this as a huge 90s/early 2000s Honda fan boy.

I think our cars will be in far better shape down the road than most civics. Reason being the type of people that own them. Look no further than the Focus SVT and compare it to same year Honda Si. Which ones tend to be in better condition. At least for me, most Si's are destroyed. Different color body parts, slammed with so much negative camber that the wheels look like DirecTV satelite dishes, interior panels missing, bondo everywhere. Focus SVT's in comparison that I've seen are largely unmolested and still intact. Honda makes a quality product, but the people that tend to own them second hand.... a lot of them destroy the cars.

Functional or not, I couldn't buy a car with that ridiculous rear wing.

I agree that most Civics get raped, but they're far more common cars in general, and like you said, the type of people that own them. Region has a lot to do with it as well...much easier to find a clean Honda up here on the Treasure Coast or Space Coast than it is down in Northern Cuba. [rofl]

I never was, nor will I EVER be a Honda, OR Toyota, Nissan, Mitsushitsu, etc. fanboi (nope, not even their "perfect", deified, performance cars so 'pedestalized' by the fanboyzz), so they could never get me into this car, even if it had AWD and superior performance (i.e.; even more than it's 'rumored' 340 HP). [nono]

Unlike most on here, I am buying this car specifically because it has a domestic nameplate on it (yup regardless of where it, or it's parts are screwed together), and NOT one of the Nippon, or Korean variety.

Regardless of how great the FiST may be, IF it had a; Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, etc. badge on it (even if built here, in this country), it would not be on it's way to me. [wink]

Yep. Once my lease on my base Civic is up, I'm leasing a Type R.

I was also a Honda/Acura guy. The first car I bought myself after school was a Prelude, later I had an Integra GSR. Great cars, excellent handling, very reliable, quick enough for their time. In 2012 when I went looking for a new sports sedan DD they had nothing for me, the sedans were boring entry-level luxury cars. I had a few as service loaners and they were competent enough, but I had zero desire to own one.The last sedan they made that interested me was the Acura RSX. It's good to see them making another performance sedan, but I also think the wing is a bit too much.

Honda is trying too hard to make it look tough...Looks like something you'd build out of Legos with all the sharp edges. Too, FWD and 340 HP? Good luck getting good use from that set-up. Sorry, but I'm not impressed Honda.

Thought they made pretty good use of the power in that video.

The way the Euro type R puts power down is flat out amazing for a FWD car. Can't wait to see what the new and improved one will do. If you think about it, 340hp is about what an X37 Fiesta makes power-wise, and most of us don't have issues putting power down. And the Type R will actually have a real limited slip

Yeah, exactly.

I'm sure it's awesome and everything, but I'm too damn old to drive a car that looks like that.

Why wouldn't you be able to use ~320whp?

I grew up on Honda. Still have my EP3 Si Hatchback. Notwithstanding, not sure how I feel about this new one. Need to see it in person. Hondas do hold up though; my 2002 EP3 Si has the same clutch I drove it off the showroom floor with. I've yet to drive a better feeling transmission in an 'economy' car.

What does it weigh, and what's the proposed price point?

There are MANY cars I'd rather own than this thing, even if it were affordable, but if it is in the FoRS's price range, there is NO contest as far as I'm concerned, 'JDM YO!' fanboyzz be damned!

Former Honda owner here and currently still a fan. I'd love to own this, but I think I'm too old for a car that looks like this. Dont get me wrong, I love the way it looks. But if I were to step out of the Fiesta ST I'd probably move onto a VW, Audi or BMW.
