Just bought a set of NGK Ruthenium plugs from Whoosh. Coming pregapped at .028.

So many speaking highly of them, I have to see what is up!

Interestingly enough I have both standard and 1 step colder. Started running like crap for no certain reason and no codes. My current step colder ruthenium plugs have been in for about 9k, but pulled them anyway. Plugs were gapped good still, so I scoped to find that I had a bunch of carbon build up. From what I can figure, my colder climate and lack of longer trips over covid, the step colder were not getting hot enough for proper burn off.

So since I had the standard temp ruthenium as well I swapped those in and after some regular driving (my regular driving includes a lot of hard pulls..lol) like I did with the step colder, all is getting back to normal and seems to be running like a champ again. I will scope it again soon to see how it is looking.

So just a tidbit if anyone is having the same mystery running like garbage issues

44,400ish stock turbo. 9k on step colder plugs. Scoped out of curiosity at 32k with standard heat ngk iridiums since new and everything was pretty clean. It could be another factor, but this is the only thing that is glaring at me.

Have a high performance motorcycle engine that doesn't have an oxygen sensor which means the ECU has no ability to tweak air/fuel on the fly. For the first 40k, completely stock it had no issues. Gradually it started to develop cold-engine run/start issues. Later began fouling the plugs/cylinders. I was able to compensate initially with additional (Lucas brand) octane; later blocking off up to 50% of the radiator; later hotter plugs. Progression of the symptoms were gradual. 15k later, what actually resolved the issue, (allowing an undo of previous changes,) was telling the ECU to enrich the fuel supply.

Obviously we're running a wideband O² sensor and on a stock tune, there's no reason to suspect that you're running lean. The non-stock colder plug is the logical assumption. The manufacturer seems to run their direct-injection engines a lot hotter than previous port-injection; I suspect for that very reason -- keep them clean. Typically one needs to go colder in order to help prevent pre-ignition. Higher compression, hotter engine and/or advanced timing are conditions that might warrant a colder plug.

^^^When I do get a tune, on the factory turbo, I will tell the tuner that I want to run the factory heat range plugs, and that they should work around that, even if it might cost me a few less peak (or even under the curve) ponies/torques. [wink]

Also why, even once an aftermarket radiator is in the car, I will never ever go lower than the 'optional' Motorcraft 180*F thermostat, at least while still living in my current climate.
