Tuning For Pump E85

Hey guys, so I’ll be tuning for pump e85 soon. I’ve reached out to my local gas station where I intend to regularly fill up, kwik trip, here in Wisconsin... they said currently the fuel is e70. I have not physically tested the fuel myself, yet. I also reached out to tune+ and asked about the necessity of an ethanol content gauge. He said it was recommended just to monitor the ethanol content to try and stay within 10% value of what it was originally tuned on, as there’s not much variation tolerated in the tune. So onto my question, in the event of tuning for pump e85, call it likely e70, I end up filling with a bad set of fuel like e40 from the pump... what do I do?? Is there an ethanol content booster or something that can just be added to the fuel to offset this? I’ll be installing an innovation ethanol gauge ASAP, but just trying to sort some remaining questions out.

Just run E70 and fill it up with just e85. The variance can be too much to get pure e85.

Pump E85 is supposed to be 51%-85% ethanol. So theoretically you'll never drop below 51%. At the 3 stations in my area that I've tested they've ranged from E65-E80. Another option would be contacting a local speed shop for smaller cans of Ignite Orange or something similar that way if you do get low content you can throw a couple gallons in to raise the level.

Also, I believe @JDG tuned for full E85 so he may be helpful.

Both good points on the e70 note and also possibly snagging something to add to the fuel. I’ve looked and haven’t found anything to add that makes sense to me.. I’ll look at that ignite stuff. @JDG what’s been your experience with running full corn? Do you ever have any issues with it being consistent or having to modify your content etc?

So if the fuel is e50 and tuned for e70... is the ethanol content lower by 20%? Those E rating numbers don’t speak to octane at all... something like boostane or alternative just increases octane rating. So would using a product like that change my ethanol content gauge from reading e50 to e70 with proper amount added to the fuel tank?

No* I use the boostane shots. It just increases the Octane.

Yeah that’s what I thought... so I guess there’s no way to easily correct underrated pump e85 to achieve a higher ethanol rating if shy out of the pump?

Well just ordered an ethanol gauge. I guess mostly for peace of mind and monitoring. Hopefully the pump gas is stable and stays about e70 then.

No issues. Mitch and I agreed to tune for E70 which safely works for the range I have seen at my local station between E70-E82. I have never seen a tank lower than E72 in my area.

I would definitely recommend a gauge/analyzer for piece of mind. That way if you end up filling up with E55 or something you can just baby the car until the tune can be adjusted or you get better fuel.

So far so good with full E except for terrible gas mileage and the desire to go WOT everywhere I go

Very good! Sounds like it’s all ready then and I’ll shoot for e70. That allows for e60-e80 I would presume? It sounded like Adam tune+ said tune doesn’t accommodate for anymore than about 10% but I would assume that’s +/- 10%?? So shooting for e70 allows +/- 10% (e60-e80)... I believe my local station for it is a pretty consistent type of quality fueling. So I think they’ll be on point most of the time.
