Worldwide Performance (WWP) Stainless Steel SS409 3.00" Cat Back Exhaust System With Tips Review

Recently, I purchased the Worldwide Performance (WWP) stainless (T409) 3" cat back exhaust from MVP Auto Parts on Amazon. It looks like an MBRP knockoff. I tried to track down the actual manufacturer and wound up at the ebay Worldwide Performance web store, but couldn't get much farther than that. It looks like it was first listed on Amazon and ebay in January 2018. WWP does have decent reviews though, and they seem to make a ton of exhausts for other platforms so I figured it was a fairly safe bet. I checked the reviews on Amazon and ebay, along with whatever I could find on the forum and facebook groups but, there is not a lot of info out there, so I figured I would start a thread with some photos and impressions.

It arrived within a week while I was on vacation, so I opened it up last night. I don't have it installed yet, I am scheduled to rent a lift space in a local garage next Saturday, so I don't have to cut the stock exhaust. I am planning on using the method of removing the stock exhaust shown in the Mishimoto exhaust install video on youtube. I know, I know, just cut it, but I really want the option to return to full stock at some point, so I am going to keep that stock exhaust in one piece.

I really just wanted some more noise (because race car) and I can't justify paying much more than a couple hundred bucks for just some extra grunt. I don't really expect much performance gains. I read the whole exhaust thread, and downpipe thread, and I am fine with sticking with the stock downpipe until I upgrade the turbo. So for now it's just this cat back.

Disclaimer: This is the first aftermarket exhaust I've purchased and the first I have seen up close, I am not a welder or metallurgist so I can only really take pictures and let other people comment on the quality of the welds and pieces.

So far impressions are about what I would expect. Everything arrived nicely packaged and intact, and all the items were included that are shown in the links below, including the resonator with bolted flange, mid-pipe, exit-pipe, s-pipe, hangers, gasket, washers, straps, and tips. It is mandrel bent and supposedly TIG welded 3" 409 stainless pipe, except for the sections between the downpipe and resonator which is a smaller diameter, I assume 2.5". The tips are polished 304 stainless. They are double walled, and seem pretty nice. The resonator appears to have two double wall sections with a bunch of cutout "scallops" with three larger holes drilled into the inside ends of the double wall sections as can be seen in the photos below.

I have heard that the bolted connection on the tips is one of the main complaints. You can either weld them on, or expand the exit pipe ends so they clamp better. The other complaint is that the exhaust tips do not want to sit level. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the install or the hangers, but some have bent or cut and re-welded the hangers to make them sit straight. I am really hoping I can get all this to work without an issue during my install. My other concern is drone, which apparently is practically unavoidable with a 3" cat back without some additional hardware (Hemholtz, muffler, etc.) The drone also seems to be fairly subjective and depends on the listener. Once I have it installed I will be able to comment on this, but for now I am expecting the worst.

Not that it makes too much of a difference with 409, but that's not TIG; some of it might be SMAW but most of it looks like cold MIG. Even so, great price.

just me but i would wire wheel the welds and throw some exhaust paint on there, but I am ridiculously finicky

Man, prepare for drone! I know you mentioned you have never had an aftermarket exhaust on your car, but have you ever sat in a car with one and gone for a long drive? That thing gives me a headache just looking at it...

My typical drive in this car is less than 30 minutes, so thats good, although there is about 10 minutes of traffic on some days.

That Exhaust will Rust quickly.... If I t was me id bring it somewhere and have it Ceramic coated. I did it with mine....all the way to the tips....still looks like it was just sprayed!

I thought the stainless (although only 409) would be enough for my climate. We don't use salt around here, and it goes to the coast maybe once a year for a cruise. It's garaged at home and work. How much do you think coating would cost?

Its so much Per Foot make sure they Don't use TurboX if you do....that shit is mediocre at most! Call around your area....I did from the CatBack also .....

Little of both. Doesn’t look like they did much cleanup after welding it, I would just do it for peace of mind.

I'd bet that those welds are done with ER70 wire or something similar. That will rust. I'd get something on at least the welds before you mount the exhaust.

Grab some header paint from your local auto parts store. Make sure to de-grease the whole exhaust before you paint.

I think I am going to DIY paint/coat the exhaust after getting recommendations to at least paint the welds. I am planning on using the Rustoleum High Heat Primer and Matte Black Paint combo, after a proper wire brush and cleaning. I need to get the end pipes expanded prior to this, so the tips will fit better. Fingers crossed it turns out okay, and will be a little more custom, and potentially perform better? The coating is supposed to increase the emissivity.

After getting recommendations (from [MENTION=8822]Clit_Beastwood[/MENTION], [MENTION=3563]TyphoonFiST[/MENTION], and [MENTION=4740]jeffreylyon[/MENTION]) to clean up the welds and paint/coat the exhaust because of potential rust concerns, I decided why not, it would be cheap and easy enough to DIY spray a high-temp coating and a lot easier now than later. So I set about researching, and found that VHT, and Rust-o-leum had some of the more common high-temperature spray ceramic coatings that I could find in my local parts store on short notice. I was able to find the VHT primer and paint at my local Autozone, the primer was the hard one to track down on short notice. Somebody had already bought all the flat black, so I settled on aluminum as the second best option, rather than red or white. I first wire brushed the whole thing with a HF angle grinder, and it looked nice and shiny, then I made a little spray booth and donned my respirator, and other PPE and set about spraying primer. I followed the instructions exactly, with two light coats 10 minutes apart followed by a third medium wet coat. I let the primer sit for 30 minutes prior to applying the paint with the same intervals of spraying.

It turned out pretty good, I have some places where it could use some touchup; where the pieces were leaned up on the sheets, some runs (where I started spraying on the piece rather than off and moving on to it), and a little bit of lint spots. I'm okay with the color but it looks a little plastic-y, it doesn't look as cool as @TyhphoonFiST's ceramicoated exhaust, but I will take it for a couple hours of work and $30 worth of materials. Plus I got to do a project. See the results below. Now it's time to install!

I am wondering if the coating will change the sound of the pipes significantly, I doubt it, but it might be interesting. I also read that the paint will allow better emissivity which means it will radiate heat to the surrounding air better, and potentially cool the exhaust pipes and thus exhaust gases, not sure what that will do, but probably nothing.

Also, prior to painting, I was also able to stop by a local exhaust shop and they expanded the end pipes to fit the tips a little better, one turned out good, the short one split at the seam (I can't be certain of the cause, operator error, or material failure guessing operator.) They rewelded and ground the section of the split that would not be covered by the tip, I may have to weld this one on later as it didn't really get expanded and the tip is still loose fitting.

I work on the freeway and find bolt on exhaust tips all the time. Get em welded bro! Btw it looks great.
