In an effort to have my brake lights come up to full brightness as fast as possible and help avoid some smartphone watching driver from plowing into the back of my car, I was looking at getting some LED brake lights.

Has anyone found some CREE or otherwise bright enough replacements that end up being an actual improvement over stock incandescent bulbs?

I've been trying to research this as well and I do have some options but they are a little on the spendy side - but you do get what you pay for with this stuff. Look at what the LUMEN output is for the bulbs, remember that any bulbs that rate output in WATTS will be brighter - the higher wattage the better.

Partially correct. Lumen output is key, yes! But more wattage, in and of itself, doesn't mean brighter. Inefficient (cheap!) designs turn that wattage into HEAT, not light! Lumens and efficiency are key!

well, I mean in the context of finding LEDs on the black hole of the internet, finding the higher wattages will generally lead you to a brighter bulb... not so much focus on being technically correct.
A lot of this stuff is very finnicky, but I found going by wattages worked for me.
