Thoughts on mesh grills

I plan on upgrading my intercooler and would like to show it off. I live in an area where it snows during the winter so I can't just remove the bottom "grill" and leave it wide open like I've seen a couple of the cars have on this forum because off the rock salt and grinders they throw on the road. That got me thinking about putting in a custom mesh grill. Basically i'd buy a black universal mesh grill, remove the factory bottom "grill" and put that in its place. I wanted to ask everyones opinion on if they thought that would look tacky or not first though and to see if anyone here has done it. Also, how well do they hold up? Thanks for your input.

I might have to give them a try. I like the whole cut to fit, I just have to decide if i like the edge trim showing or not. How well does the edge trim work? I was just gonna use sticky zip tie pads and zip tie it on for easy removal if it breaks.
Wish there was a kit that just fit. I like fabricating but don't have the time.
There's ALWAYS time to work on your fiST!!

Thank you everyone else for the input!!!! A write up and how to may be done when I get around to doing it.

I used black painted stainless steel diamond mesh I got on eBay and neoprene edging from customcargrills.com. As far as I'm concerned it looks great. I wanted some serious protection for that CP-E intercooler, all sorts of junk flying off the roads around D.C.

How did the edge trim attach to the car?

Plenty of good options. I decided to keep the thin verticals under the snap-off facade for extra strength against front impacts. Mine's a daily driver and my priority was protection with maximum air flow.
