Ford is reportedly planning its next-generation Focus RS hot hatch and it could have over 400 horsepower.

Autocar reports the new Focus RS will be ready for 2020 and will take advantage of a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup to generate around 400 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque. Not only will the mild-hybrid setup improve performance, it will reduce CO2 and toxic emissions to help meet European regulations.

The new Ford Focus will make its debut next week and the American automaker has already said it will move upmarket. It is part of a 40-model Ford electrification offensive that was revealed at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

According to the report, the next Focus RS will continue to use the current model’s 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with the addition of the 48-volt integrated starter/generator. With up to or over 400 hp on tap, it will not only keep up but possibly even beat the next-generation of hot hatches coming from Germany, including the new AMG A-Class. Autocar also says there’s a possibility the next Focus RS will offer a dual clutch transmission option, along with a six-speed manual.

When the next-generation Focus RS does get introduced, look for it to only be available as a five-door hatchback model.
