<< ....................... AGM ... charge ... up to five times faster than the flooded version .................................................................. AGM batteries are sensitive to overcharging. A charge to 2.40V/cell (and higher) is fine; however, the float charge should be reduced to between 2.25 and 2.30V/cell (summer temperatures may require lower voltages). Automotive charging systems for flooded lead acid often have a fixed float voltage setting of 14.40V (2.40V/cell); a direct replacement with a sealed unit could overcharge the battery on a long drive. (See BU-403: Charging Lead Acid.) .............................................................. >>

Based on a voltage reading after pulling the battery, I suspect AGM will do fine in our vehicles. If you find or believe otherwise, post-up. Thinking it was low, I did put it on a standard FLA charger with auto-shutoff for a short time and found that the battery was then reading high... and taking a really long time to come back down. Again, this was a probably 20 minutes of charging max and the auto-shutoff was never tripped.

Very helpful post....I don't understand that when it comes to replacement of the OEM battery that people wont chip an extra $30-40 to get a battery that has a longer life, is more stable , is usually sealed and wont spill , plus they can support electronics in modern vehicles for a prolonged period of time better.

I was a bit concerned that when I put the Odyssey 96R-600 on the bespoke Odyssey/Schumacher fully automated charger recently (it instantly does full voltage charge, float charge once up to 100%, or even a desulfating charge, IF that is even a 'thing' with an AGM?? if necessary) and it showed only a 70% life before charging.

It came back up in both voltage and percentage fairly quickly on the charger, but I was worried as to why it had discharged so rapidly, and worried that maybe I got a 'new product problem' or a defective one, until I realized that 99% of my driving lately has been very 'short trip', and yeah, I still (stupidly, but I LOVE my music, and need it in these times [wink]) listen to the radio/CD with the engine not running.

I own the Deltran Charger that is Bluetooth capable and has all the setting for AGM...GEL....Lead Acid. It works great. I have my AGM for my Typhoon on it and let it sit the whole winter and it watches it.

I'd rather buy a battery than an alternator. Battery is reading 12.0v in under two years of ownership. I've been watching volt meter in the front 12v outlet and have been watching it gradually decline. I suspect I got one that sat on the shelf too long. Car does a lot of sitting but not enough to explain it not recovering after some driving. Still manages to stay above 10.0v during cranking, which is good.

So I've been searching for a replacement. Can't find a 96R AGM. πŸ€”

If I'm forced to return to a puking lead-acid, I'll be placing it in a large high-temp (food) bag with a bunch of baking soda in the bottom like I did with my prior vehicle. πŸ™„

This is a great equivalent chart.... looks like a T5 or T6 will fit. Also you could be like me and Roll a group 48 and just modify the battery tray...

Thanks for the resource @TyphoonFiST.

Doing some search of batteries that were close lead to another resource...
https://batterygroupexpert.com/group-96r-battery/
But they failed to account of availability of these various sizes. (back to the same issue)

Figuring AGM availability was a common issue...

...lead to this thread...

...which ironically lead me BACK to the same place I got my first battery...

...which is very strange because I searched that site before posting on the 16th and an AGM battery never came up for me then. πŸ™„

Anyway, I'll be picking one up tomorrow.

Two things in reading that thread.
1) Li-Ion won't work well for our cold climate.
2) Buying the biggest baddest high-amperage, high-capacity, deep-cycle battery, might be the best long-term investment battery wise, but won't be the best thing for the alternator. The longer they run near capacity (charging a battery), the hotter they run, the shorter their lifespan. Had a weak engine ground cause an alternator in a previous car to run full-field at 15+ volts. Depending on quality of the replacement alternator, it took anywhere from weeks to minutes to burn up a new replacement. (burnt up three before I figured it out)

I've found quirky issues like that when utilizing alot of Retail Autoparts sites....things that will work and fir just don't come up. It's almost as if they don't want to make a sale. Weird!

This has been helpful to me, to know that battery monitoring system has to be reset after a new battery is installed.
I'm just curious, what is your screenshot in this post from, is that from the official service manual? Thanks
Yes looks like the service manual
