I have not yet tested performance,
but i think i have better fuel economy with the new gtx turbo. Makes sense? less restriction?


As i have understood a large turbo gives more power then a small turbo at same boost level.
But since the ecu is targeting torque rather than boost, what happens when i upgrade turbo but not the tune?
Will i get the same torque curve with stage 2(except at lower rpm of course). I have the european ecu which uses MAF tuning.

I'll let the turbo gurus on here chime in but upgrading a turbo without a proper tune is really not recommended as you won't get enough fuel.

It's not so much less restriction as it is more volume. Think of it in terms of water, you can flow more water through a sewer pipe than you can through a garden hose, even if pressure is the same. It's the volume of air that produces the power. There are two ways to increase the volume; more pressure/faster flow or larger diameter piping.

In any case you need tuning to provide enough fuel to maintain a healthy AFR.

Because as you daily drive the car, you'll be running way less boost, your get better fuel mileage. It your on the interstate on cruise control, the mileage increase could be scary good. We have actually seen a fuel mileage increase in all the modded stock turbos, and its a small increase in "flow" vs what you'd see with a gtx.

Yup, I've seen mileage increases on most of the bigger turbo Evos I have tuned. At least when they are cruising, at WOT, another story. ;)

Psi/boost is a measurment of restriction.

I guess I should say speed versus volume.

But you are correct about pressure needing a restriction to push against, and a more restrictive pathway will yield more pressure. Hence why boost pressure builds quicker in the intercooler piping of a smaller diameter and why big piping typically runs a lower pressure and has more lag.
