Thanks for the analysis. Slicks may have flex, but they definately increase the chance of broken parts. In any car. As long as folks are ok with that, they are definitely the best choice for better ET's. Racing is always a compromise. Be safe and you spin (although this will help trap speed). Get sticky on the line and enjoy your better ET's. Just know you are stressing your car more and be ready for possible consequences.
I spun the slicks each time because I couldn't get heat into them (ESC stopped any attempt to get a nice smokey burnout) as I left the traction control active which is a no-no because it won't hook at all.
Won't happen again.
1.6-1.7 60 ft times have a small amount of slip, not spin, big difference. Plus stock cars don't have serious clamping force, it will get hot and slip first. Dropping slick cold pressure down too far reduces trap speed.
You keep speaking about dead hooking, maximum traction, that isn't happening, there is some slip, but little to no spin (not audible).
I broke an input shaft in my SRT-4 but I wasn't at the track and I wasn't on slicks, I wasn't doing anything but merging onto the freeway, not even under boost. Ed Peters a retired Chrysler Power train engineer (and a long time Mopar 2.2 Turbo drag racer) has a video on YT explaining how using ATF lead to issues with the New Venture transmission in the SRT-4's failing.
The trans was originally pulled from the Turbo-Diesel Dodge Caravan EU market parts bin.
Using actual gear oil and making a couple of minor changes inside have lead to bulletproof transmission, running 9's is a regular thing in SRT-4 world, 1.5-1.6 60 ft times, 25" tall slicks.
Honestly, Ford has likely sold nearly 50,000 Focus ST's and Fiesta ST's since they were introduced to the North American market. I got a used trans from a 2005 SRT-4 that had a OEM Quaife limited slip diff in it for $500.
Enough morons own these things, drive aggressively on the street and wrap them around a telephone pole that there's plenty of used parts available. I just looked online (cars-parts.com) and there is a trans from a '13 ST for $675, I am not going to fret much if something happens and it's my daily driver.
I love drag racing, it's where cars get respect from others in the community. A few Honda dudes I was pitted next too were impressed a car with me in it about 3,300 pounds ran 13.96 without even close to optimizing the setup.
The risk is small, wheel hop breaks more parts more often. Any time you delay WOT you loose time (ET), there's nothing impressive about high trap speeds, if a slower car gets there first.
One more time -
The SRT-4 slipped a little or spun the slick a tiny bit, best 60 ft was 1.74 stock suspension, it was only lowered via Eibach Pro kit.
The ST is spinning the slicks but I know why and I will fix that next time out which is next week. Despite all those issues best 60 ft was 1.999
