Great, thanks for the replies.

On my '94 Ford Escort, a port in a similar location connects to the valve cover; for crankcase emissions recovery purposes. Speaking for the 'scort, it wouldn't be a vacuum leak for the fact that it's pre air filter; and intake via crankcase is metered via PCV part. Just bought it so don't know much about the setup of this engine yet.

Are the Haynes manuals any good for this year/vehicle ?

PM me with any recommendations for electronic factory service manual. (not interested in renting a manual)

If you check you will find that the fitting is not drilled through on the FiST, so there is no leak of any kind.
The lower air box must be the same part as the NON-ST.

That fitting IS used on a NON-ST Fiesta as part of the PCV system.

We ran across this when we installed a Mountune air box in a NON-ST.
In that case we had to put the fitting in.

That answers my questions thanks. I was thinking that it was likely a part that is shared among engine models.

Now I'm wondering how the crankcase emissions are handled on this setup. That's why I like reading over service manuals... not to necessarily to repair issues, but to learn about the car and how it's systems work.

yes, that is the nipple that I was talking about, I actually had the airbox out yesterday and that nipple is actually blocked off, as it should since is not used in our FiST..
