I have a 2014 what would it entail for me to be able to install Sync3 in my car? The Sync system in my car currently works ok except the XM radio doesn't automatically turn on so I have to always cycle the system to get it to turn on.

I'm going to take it to the dealership but I was wondering if it would be as easy as installing a new operating system and if that is even something that can be done?

It's very likely more than something that can just be downloaded. My guess is that you would prolly need to buy the whole head unit piece. No way to tell if the new system is compatible with the old hardware in you car though. Find a junked 2016 in a yard somewhere and swap the parts.

Ford has said that the pre-2016 cars can't be updated to Sync3.

They were talking about the software though. If someone got the whole head unit and associated gear out of a 16, that might be a different story.

The hardware is different. How much hardware is different is the question. If it was just the head unit and all the connectors were exactly the same with the same pinouts, then it's just a matter of swapping the head unit. If history says anything, different hardware has different wiring connectors. With the infotainment system so tied into the car, will you need a swapped ECU? What other electronics connected to it only work with that system? When you consider all that it's really hard to say that it's worth swapping at this point. Maybe years down the road when you pick up a 2016 parts car that was in a wreck for cheap and you can experiment if someone else hasn't documented the swap at that point. It is the same car sure, so there's a certain amount of items that it ties into that you can swap over and make it work, but at what cost for what parts and how much time and tear down will have to happen just to swap to a newer infotainment system? At this point no one knows and the cars are new enough no one has really torn the interior apart on both cars to compare.

Exactly, basically it would be up to the OP, or anybody else,to decide if having sync 3 is really worth all the trouble. Also at this point putting in all the work as a guinea pig.

Maybe I'm weird, the MFT system was abhorrent beyond belief, or I got a defective Sync 3 system; but everyone is rejoicing over the fact that Sync 3 is so much more responsive and faster. To be honest, what I see with my unit is what I'd expect of what i hear about the MFT system. Doesn't always register my touches, when it does register it takes a second to respond to my touches. When I'm driving and trying to navigate I have to touch it, wait for it to hopefully register while trying to watch the road, and when it doesn't I get frustrated with it and touch it a bit harder to get it to register. Considering the hardware is made specifically to run the software installed on it, why under power the hardware so the whole thing doesn't respond as it should? That's what I'm seeing is the issue here.

Today (and this isn't the first time) it started playing FM radio on the station I have it on normally. I didn't think much of it at first but I had it playing on my USB music stick when I turned off the car last so I went to switch it, but it was saying it was playing music from USB on the screen and the songs would change as if they were playing through. But if I selected USB, nothing would happen. I could switch to AM, but it would stay the same on screen. Next time I restart the car it's fine usually. I had a ton of issues with iPods and an iPhone 5 while trying to play music. They all had their own different set of issues, but both of the iPods froze eventually and I would have to hard reset them to get them to play for awhile. They worked fine on any other device or when playing through headphones. Eventually I just switched to a USB flash drive. Not my ideal way of doing it because I can't transfer playlists like that, but it works with that at least.

I don't know... Has anyone had experience otherwise? I'm not really blown away with the performance and reliability of this Sync 3 system... I was holding out for the software update that's supposed to be coming soon before I condemn it, but it's taking awhile.
