So the car now has 38k on the original rear pads, they are very low, couple of millimeters of actual pad left at best. I ordered ceramic hawk pads but KNS has them on backorder for another week or so.

How bad is this on the rotors? Will I have issues if I continue with what I'm doing? The fist is my only means of transportation and I travel quite a bit, recently I'm engine braking and driving slower than usual just to preserve pad life.

Imo as long as you have pad left and not metal on metal and you are not planning on douing any track activity 2 mm could last quite a few 1000 miles. Just make sure one pad is not much lower than the others as it is the one to keep an eye on.
