What sparked your interest in "driving"?

The title says it all. If you drive a FiST and are on this forum, then you are an automotive enthusiast. So many people view a car as a tool; basic transportation. We view it as a hobby. What makes you different? Was it a previous car? Was it an older sibling? Was it an experience?

For me, early on, it was a combination of my uncle always building model cars and my dad taking pride in washing our cars.

Then, when I got my first car, my parents were supportive of my desire to get a manual transmission. I got a '91 Acura Integra. This thing was such a blast to drive. It had a rawness to it and such character, that I really fell in love with just the act of driving.

Then later on, my younger brother became an auto tech, and we would spend many nights in our garage tinkering with our cars. Making modifications and feeling the difference it made, for better or worse.

So what led you to become an enthusiast?

I bought a Hot VWs magazine when I was 14 on the way to a camping trip. I marveled at the engine parts in the ads in the back of the magazine.

My first car was a 1972 Super Beetle with a 1776 and dual Webers and a fat cam that ran about 20 percent of the time.

But I loved it.

I loved showing up assholes in V6 chargers and lifted trucks.

Being as fast or faster than most stock V8's was fun too.

I like going fast, but also like keeping a low profile. The cost and time of modding does become prohibitive with young children.

I would say Beers and Bitches & Burnouts and NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT.... I guess my neighbor who lived across the street with a Top fuel funny car...Playboy centerfolds posted in his garage....snap ON Tool boxes and had a Python as a pet that had its own room in his house. That is most likely the reason why.....He lived a lifestyle that was all about Cars...Beers and Bitches.

I'm dating myself, but my dad got some free passes to a Can Am race at Riverside International Raceway back in the 70s. I thought the cars were amazing, started building model cars, subscribed to Road & Track (which was one of the few mags that covered Formula 1 back then), and I've loved cars ever since.

Growing up I had a friend whose older brother had a trick 69 Camaro. He would always be tinkering on it. He gave me his old Hot Rod magazines and I would read them cover to cover. That dude got me hooked.

I remember seeing this video when I was young and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. Letā€™s be honest though, itā€™s still pretty cool. I remember watching this video and after that Iā€™ve always had a soft spot for 03-04 Cobraā€™s. I still watch this video once or twice a year lol. But once so got my Gen2 Mazdaspeed3 I realized cornering was even more fun.

This reminds me. For Christmas in 1996, my grandma subscribed me to Automobile magazine. She ended up renewing it every year for the next decade. I started driving in 1999. I would just dream about the new C5 Corvette or the ACR Viper; seeing comparisons to the next gen economy cars; read about tracking the Nurburgring. There's something about car magazines that bores holes into brains.

Initial D :D, actually a need for speed game circa 1994, wait an atari game named Enduro
I remember staying up waaay too late for nights on end playing the first Grand Turismo. Winning enough races to get that Nissan Silvia or stage two engine pack for my Prelude.

Have always loved the feel of driving since I was a little kid and got to drive the riding mower. I've gone through 17 vehicles prior to getting my FiST and none have made me grin and giggle quite like it.

I didn't even think about videogames. I loved Burnout, Test Drive Offroad 3, Project Gotham Racing, etc.

Unfortunately my first 3 cars were slow and boring. But the Mazdaspeed 3 woke me up.

My dad enjoyed cars he had a Monte Carlo SS in the 80s. Unfortunately I believe my mom killed that out of him so I never got to experience cool cars growing up at home.
Jeremy Clarkson, the original top gear, video games all had an influence.
I started playing around with lawn mower engines at 12, and started doing all the work on my parents only car at 14. That's why I have three cars now the idea of not always having something to drive irritates the hell out of me. I took a automotive program online I believe it was education direct then, it's called Penn and Foster now started at 14 finished at 16. I also went to community college for this after the military. I have a Associate's degree in automotive technology.
I have always felt extremely comfortable operating a piece of equipment driving has always been effortless to me. I love going fast I don't know how anybody drives slow it puts me to sleep. The first car was a 96 Ford escort piece of junk, but I still managed to eat a set of tires every 6 months.
I kind of treat engines as a living thing even my yard equipment I feel bad for it if I don't take care of it. I know that sounds crazy.

You can drive an Accord and still be an enthusiast. What you do or don't drive, doesn't make you an enthusiast. On the flip side, there are those that complain about almost literally everything that sets the FiST apart from the base Fiesta. In response to that, Ford later introduced the "ST Line"... a raised automatic shift 1.0L on standard suspension that only looks similar to the FiST.

In terms of the qustion... I dunno. It's innate. I've never been satisfied with just using anything. I'm must know something about how it works, what its shortcomings, flaws and limits are; how to maintan it and contemplate ways in which it can be improved.
