Options specific for FIST for getting wider tires?

I've done a fair amount of reading and searching on this but most wasn't specifically aimed at the FIST, so the answers weren't exactly accurate. So what exactly can we do to this little rocket to get wider tires for better grip? ATM i have 201/40/17 on (i assume stock size), but when i bought them i asked the shop and they said any wider and they will rub the fender well. So how do people go wider?

I have read about spacers and such that basically extend the axel length but is that the extent of it? I don't really like the idea of reducing my circumfrence for multiple reasons, i want to keep the sidewalls the same and i have aftermarket wheels i don't want to replace yet. Im a complete noob here, what are our options? Thanks to all in advance.

Yeah, that post is good, just keep in mind that for the stock wheels 215/40/17 is the one wider you can go with that will actually add a touch of sidewall too and not worry about rubbing unless you go FULL compression off a jump or something, hehe... The selection in that size isn't as good as 205, but SimpleTire and other online sites, even eBay, has a decent selection and I like how with eBay you can pay a flat $99 that includes all charges, to have them shipped to a Firestone near you and installed.
