I notice spam posts just about every day when I load up in the morning (early usually, most likely before the mods are awake).
This is usually an option on out of the box forum setups, but I think you can make it so people have to have a minimum number of posts before they can make a new thread. All the spam I see is new threads, and not replies, so it might work at preventing it. Even if it's just 1 post before you can make a new thread it may be effective.
