I was doing some thinking and wondered if anyone else thought about trying to use a k03 or even k04 turbo off a vw 1.8T? Looking at pictues they seem similar enough to be able to make it fit with a custom downpipe perhaps? It seems they are much more affordable, than erf or atx, but not sure what the performance gains would be? Thoughts?

K04 would be really nice. Even a K03 is a good bit bigger than the kp39. The thing is.... If your going to go through all the downtime, all the fabbing, and all the expense to adapt a larger turbo, why not go for the latest in efficiency? The EFR is pricey, but by the time you do it correctly and buy a mazdaspeed turbo ( K04 ) for say $350 + $350 rebuild, your 1/2 way to a brand new ball-bearing EFR. I think it would be something that would work very well, size wise and all. The focus K03 would be perfect in my eyes. But in the end.... You spend a ton of time, effort, cost, and downtime on something that almost no one will appreciate like you do. It will be a lot of "value" to anyone saying, "it has a EFR", vs "it has a home made, adapted stock mazda speed turbo in it", lol.

Other wise... Anyone that wants to do it... I'll do anything i can to help :)

Looked at using a focus turbine wheel in a fist turbo and.... It wasn't even remotely close, there turbo is a lot bigger, at least on the turbine side.

One of the smaller ATP kits would be a much easier and probably better upgrade.

Hmm maybe ill try and pick up a k03 or k04 sometime this winter, and if we get a snow storm maybe ill tear into it this winter while i drive my truck! The vdub crowd is pretty big around here and a working k03 can be had for about $100, throw a rebuild at it and go to town!

If you have the down time and want to do it, I'm sure it will be a popular thread. I'd watch :)

That 1.8T vw Ko3 is a piece... Never seen so many failures on a stock turbo as much as I've seen on that one. The turbine shaft is also weak, which means its not gonna be happy with any type if custom upgrading. Just saying that because if you were to use it, you get what you get, not much helping it if it does not meet your expectations.
Stock Srt4 turbo would be epic, if it had a normal turbine housing, lol. Saw one in the shop and I was like, "holy cow, it looks huge next to the fist turbo"

I like the ATP options. I am all for more options though so if you do proceed with trying it out, that would be awesome and I would tune in.
