I have a whine in 4th and 5th gears. Took it to the dealership for a diagnosis, and they told me it was the differential bearing. Has anyone replaced this? Any tips would be appreciated. Is it something that needs to be done immediately? Also has anyone had the issue of that gear whine and turned out to be something else? The whining is the only symptom.

If ford does it, its the entire transmission. You can buy a LSD install kit and use those bearings, but you may as well put a LSD in at that point.

Do you have a recommendation on an LSD? Looks like Wavetrac is pretty popular.

was this gear whine all the time in those gears, or was it just under acceleration?

How many miles? If it's out of warranty, may as well just replace all the bearings in the transmission. It's not terribly difficult.
