2018 ST cannot access SYNC with USB plugged into CarPlay

I hope I don't get fried for this-but I have an 18 ST and I can access SYNC just fine with Steering wheel button when my iPhone is NOT plugged into the USB. If I plug in the USB cable and access CARPLAY, I cannot button into SYNC? I have to unplug my phone to do so.....what am I doing wrong? ;)
