91 vs. 93 octane OTS maps.

I did the stage 1 tune 2 years ago, but from what I remember it felt a lot more powerful than stock. It's money well spent. Enjoy!

Ok, so I bought my cobb stage 3 equipped fiesta st from CA. It had the 91 tune on it. I burned 2 tanks of 93 in it just to be safe before switching to the 93 map today. I was very disjointed and just came online to find out why. My first thought was that the ecu may need to learn the new map, but it looks like others seem to like the 91 map better even on 93 octane. It just feels less responsive on the 93 map and for me this car is all about responsiveness. I do not buy a nice light weight car with a nice small fast spooling turbo so that I need to step on the gas and wait 10 seconds before I feel the power kick in, that is for the tuner Honda crowd who like to slap big turbos on small engines. I am probably going to keep the tune for a few more days to see if it improves, but I liked the 91 tune so much better. The car even sounded better on the 91 tune, it had more of a burble to the exhaust.

Cobb's 91 and 93 tune are the same minus fuel and timing. The throttle mapping/torque request are all the same. They lean it out for 93, and they add 2 more degree's of timing through the entire rpm range. The feeling you guys are having might be all in your head, it's very common.

I recommend a pro-tune/e-tune over their OTS maps anyways, that way you can get it dialed in for your vehicle specifically and have someone to communicate with if you don't like the way it feels/drives.

Well said!

Well after driving the car more today it feels a lot better and it is running smoothly now after starting and driving it 4 or 5 times. I do think maybe I was expecting more of a boost in performance and that lead me to think that it had less. But it definitely had some stumbling on occasion the first 3 times I drove it and it caused some vibrations that I had not felt before. What is the going cost for an e-tune and who is good? I know I will probably end up doing a search anyway.

Try the 91 tune with 93 octane... lol. On my car, the 93 map sucks. I get a huge dip in power going WOT (due to timing being pulled) and the curve never recovers to red line. My situation (and car) could be different though because it is not anywhere near stock. The 91 tune has torque steer from hell, the 93 map doesn't. 50-70 mph acceleration test in 5th gear is also 1.5 seconds quicker with 91 map. Also, the longer I keep the 93 map, the slower it gets. I left it alone for a month. [:p] Here is a dyno test of stock, v.s. 91 map, v.s 93 map. There's really not much difference between the 91 and 93 map as far as raw, peak power and only 3-4 hp difference under the curve. Nothing the butt-dyno is going to feel.
What you are saying is exactly what I'm experiencing! Stage 1 93 incredibly sucky compared to stock or stage 0. I've run my car with 93 since new and will continue to do so. I do have a gutted airbox with drop in filter and an MBRP 3'' catback and Cobb RMM. I will try the Stage 1 91 tonight and post the findings.

The burble in the exhaust you explain is usually attributed to running rich. The reason it doesn't do so as much on the other tune is probably because it runs a bit leaner.
The rest of the symptoms im not sure on though, sounds odd.

Hey Guys,

just an update, car has been strong since last night when I re-flashed the car. Car was strong this morning and I anticipate it will continue. I will keep you posted. Here is what my experience has been so far

Mods:
Gutted stock airbox
Drop in GreenFilter performance filter
MBRP 3'' catback exhaust

COBB Accessport V3 Experiences:
Cobb Stage 1 93 Octane Tune with 93 Octane Fuel - Car weaker than stock, no passing power, powerband smoother
Cobb Stage 1 91 Octane Tune with 93 Octane Fuel - Car is a beast, power comes on strong and smooth

If that's the case it sounds like you should get a new custom tune.

Agreed but now that I have it working I'm good. Plus I'd like to continue to be a test subject for anybody else having this frustrating issue.

Off topic, but what exactly did you do to your airbox?

I went ahead and tried out flashing the 91 OTS on 93 octane over the weekend. Had, and I mean HAD to switch back to 93, there was a dead spot when in first gear to where I would go to take off and the engine would drop for second and pick back up. No problems with the 93 OTS, even tried reflashing to 91 and same problem. Other than that, I didn't notice any improvements either

Is your car modified in any way?

I just scanned the thread (lightly, admittedly) and have not found a single set of comparable datalogs that have been tested by a member to show the loss in power of using a 93 octane map. Considering the fact that everyone with the company has an AP3, why is no one able to show their data? I understand 'feeling' a difference but you're not going to be able to legitimately show it without logs...
