Just wondering if I can remove the sponge-thingy, circled in green in the photo, under the engine cover?

Spongy thingies are usually for sound deadening or air seals.
That question has never come up before, I will have to look into what that one is.

Why in the world would you want to remove it?

Ford spends millions developing cars. If they didn't want to put that part there, and for a good reason, they wouldn't.

Why do you take off all of the things that make the car quieter then complain that it is too loud?
Irrelevant to the topic at hand!

Seems like a heat or sound insulator.
Wondering if it makes that much noise, the little metal thing under it...

I can't find a listing or description of it anywhere.
Why don't you take it off and let us know?

Behind it is this shiny metal (I believe to be a) pump of sorts:

That would be a high pressure fuel pump for direct injection, but that is not a 1.6 ecoboost engine.

That is a completely different motor. That is the 1.0 3 cylinder
Yeah, same thingy, but I don't have my car here, and didn't find a picture online showing the pump (which I didn't know what to call).

Why did this thread get trimmed? It was more civil than the other thread(s).

I haven't taken the engine apart to this degree, but it just so happens that last week Ron @ Whoosh started selling an OEM cam bucket replacement. To get to it, you need to remove the pieces this thread is talking about.

I have no idea whether or not you can leave the spongy thing off, maybe. But here's the video of that installation:

I wonder if this pump runs hot or cold, meaning if they use the sponge to keep the temps in, or out?

The metal thingy (High pressure fuel pump or something) does run very hot.
Not sure if it helps with evaporation. After idling for a while, I could keep my finger on it without burning.
