I just wanted to note for others that I found the K&N kit to be far superior in terms of the performance of the cleaning solution as well as providing more detailed use instructions for the application of oil.

I've been using Dawn liquid dish soap for years. I just make a warm soap water solution and immerse the filter into it for a while. I then use the kitchen faucet, spraying from the inside out to rinse. Set in the sun and dry. Then use your choice of NON foam filter oil, let the oil wick into the filter and you're done.

Application of the oil...

I've read "one squirt for every 2 sq inches. ... That's much different than one squirt for every 2 inches square... Twice as much in fact. For example.. assume a 6x8. .. =48 sq in = 24 squirts... but every 2" square would only be 8/2 x 6/2 =12 squirts.

Which is it.?
