Pictures of the Vent would help to see what your working with even though we don't have the mk8 in Murica

Just send the whole car across the pond and I'll "Help" you remove the vent...[emoji2957]. You may have to remove the cluster surround. Looks like it may be a part of it or behind it.

Looked over the manual and nada. Looked over procedures that would normally require dash removal (such as heater core replacement) and they just yank the dash.

My guess is, you can pry it out with a plastic spudger tool.
