exhaust system part

Hello!
The other day we compared two cars (US and EU) to deal with my broken rear beam and noticed one difference, the American version, unlike the European one, has this thing. What this part for, how it works, and what will happen if I remove it?

That's an EVAP canister, basically designed to capture emissions from the fuel tank. If you remove it, you'll probably smell gas vapors more around the car.

ok, I was thinking it's a kind of exhaust system filter, and it recycles exhaust gases

old ones had charcoal in them, new ones i have no idea.
