Is a big/hybrid turbo swap worth it?

The x37 is a great little turbo! If you dont want a BT.....But remember a BT usually has room to grow and can handle the extra workload If you ever wanted to go further.... If you want a BT keep your eye out on the forum for a used one....or brand new in box like me. You just have to be quick on the draw!

I may investigate as well. I’m really not looking for over 300, and don’t want to run any mixes or water/meth or aux fuel. Now that may change one day. What’s the bare minimum for going big turbo?

A little birdie told me that Whoosh is about to release a hybrid, hovering in the $1500 price range, with hopes of 290hp and better, and that the test units are to be installed within the next few weeks. I’m just gonna get ready for the release on that
Yep, I'm kind of in wait and see mode on that as well! (unless another crazy deal on an X37 pops up LOL)

Yeah I know the feeling! I got a friend hired and when he hits the 90 day mark, I get a $1500 bonus. Really torn if I want to do wheels and tires or go for a turbo upgrade.

Do you really need a charge pipe? I have a 2j racing intake and I think others are running it on BT setups.

Do you mean the Intake pipe? To the turbo inlet? This is sordove a grey area IMO....I found the Factory OE intake pipe to be too small for the Garrett Turbo inlet 90 degree elbow by 1/4 inch and its even shown to be in their directions they have courtesy of ATP website for the install of the turbo. I used Whoosh's Ramair Intake pipe with a S/S coupler to join the turbo elbow and the intake tube to elongate it. I also got another 90 degree elbow from ATP and told them the kit is being sent out with the wrong Elbow.....they sent it with a 3 inch 90 degree elbow...when in reality for it to work and seal properly you need a 2 3/4 inch to 3 inch 90 degree elbow to the Turbo for it to work properly and seal. If you don't believe me check this out.....

Here is the last page of ATPs directions....if you think this will seal you are very high....drunk or just plain stupid.

Yeah that looks like shit! I want to retain as much factory as possible. Something seems neat about a quiet exhaust and car until you romp down and sound like a jet!

That would be my car with a Thermal exhaust....perfect blend....reminds me of stock cruising....but unleashes like a screeching eagle down an on ramp! [party]

If you wanna big power gain on a budget and dont want to upgrade the fuel system and keep as many stock parts as possiblethe hybrid is def the way to go. You can use stock intake and downpipe if you want although I would recommend a high flow downpipe and intake along with a dv+ if you want to get the most out of it reliably and hold boost to redline easily and of course an intercooler the depo or whoosh is plenty good for a hybrid I run the depo with my x37 on e30 I'm doing 280+wheel affording to vdyno...with the same intake setup I was around 210 or better on e30 with a stratified flash with 1 revision. I could have prob squeezed out closer to 220 on the stock turbo if I had a full custom tune because we have real good 93 and e85 here so it's a potent e30 mix. If you go high flow catted dp and keep the stock catback itll be plenty quiet barely noticeable over stock imo...I am running a catless dp and have a resonator delete on my stock catback and it's stillfairly quiet imo...prob gonna go with a cpe catback for a little more sound and to have a full 3 inch exhaust weather or not its needed. I was in the 260+ whp range on 93 tuned by Ryan at PD tuning. I have about 3 grand or so in horsepower mods done to mine and I'm making at least 100 whp more than stock and it still feels almost exactly the same as a tuned stock turbo setup when just driving around normal. Def the way to go if you want to get a big increase in power without tons invested and retain the nature of the car without having to upgrade the internals or the fuel system

I don't understand the concern for upgrade cost being some percentage of the car's MSRP. How is it more acceptable to put $10k of mods into a $50k car than a $20k? or hell, what about people that buy late 90s civic's then kswap and turbo? that's dropping about $7k into a $1500 car.

I'm personally going through some old threads cause I'm on the fence.

I do majority of my commutes within the city, I pretty much have no interest in roll races nor do I ever see people try to challenge me. Not sure how often will I actually engage above 4k rpm on a daily basis, hence quick spool like stock turbo is a must. So it's a lot of money relatively.

But maybe going WOT on a highway every once in a while just for fun might be worth it... :unsure:

I've had my car for 3.5 years now and I've sort of done everything I wanted to do to it already, so the last step is the turbo if I decide to pull the trigger on it.

I'm leaning towards a Whoosh Hybrid, but I noticed there were options to upgrade the wastegate and bypass value. Is there one, in particular, I should go for (external or internal)? I already have a V3 intercooler, but I think I also need to upgrade the boost hoses too, and what about charge pipes? I'm not looking for crazy power either (aiming for ~300) so I also don't think I really need to upgrade the fuel system either. Am I missing anything else? My other mods are listed in my signature below if that matters. I've installed all my other mods myself but I would probably get this done professionally due to the increased risk of damage if I screw up. What do you think labor would be? Thanks guys.

Just stay in the 280-350whp range with aux fuel, make sure the oil is up to temp and don’t worry about it
