Is Chasing 400whp On Stock Engine Worth It?

Hello all,

So, after a year of having the Mountune MRX Turbo on my 2018, I've realized that this thing is laggy as all hell(I didn't do enough research). Also, all the stud holding the DP to the turbo backed out so that's great. It is fun if you haven't drivin cars with faster spool times or twice as much power. Although it does make the wheels spin all the way into 3rd, I'm looking(JUST LOOKING) at doing an actual big turbo upgrade.

After doing some research for the past few days, I'm wondering if it is worth it to get to 400whp on stock engine and internals as I use my FiST as a daily and probably drive around 20k miles a year plus in the snow. Most of the articles I've read have been a couple of years old and not updated recently. I've been looking at the GTX2860R as it reads 450+hp on whoosh, but is pushing over 400+ on a stock engine on a daily worth the $4k in parts needed to spend. Has anyone blown their engine(or how many people do you know), or if it hasn't, how many miles are you currently at running that turbo?

The upgrades I was looking at was the GTX turbo, stratified 4 port aux fuel kit, and some upgraded hpfp. Does the GTX turbo support a 3" DP? Is there any other parts that are cheaper that you'd recommend to get close to 400hp. What fuel are you running(I have 91, 93 and E85 in my area). And is it even worth dropping $4K+ if you don't track it?

Why am I looking at this and not just get an S280? If I'm gonna go through the hassle to get a new turbo, I'm gonna drop big money for big results rather than spend $2k to get a turbo that will offer what, 20 maybe 30 extra hp on 91? Don't see the worth in that. But by all means, convince me, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks guys!

P.S. WHEN ARE WE GONNA GET MORE LIGHTING OPTIONS????

Just buy xxiaze G25 kit that's for sale in the classifieds right now for 4k - it'll make 400+ and spool faster than the GTX. Perfect turbo for our cars.

A few thoughts. It's early so stick with me if I'm not making any sense. At 400whp I'd say it's more a matter of "when" you have a problem not "if" you have a problem, if you run it hard very often although some have run at that level just fine. It's a coin toss IMO. Suggest checking out RocketST, Hijinx, and a few other build threads. In addition to the mods you mentioned, you'll also need an AEM MAP sensor on the manifold and uprated TMAP on the cold side pipe as the stockers can't read past 29 PSI. Aside from the engine risk - Do you have a LSD? Willing to pull fenders/flares and run 100TW tires? It's all a traction game past ~300whp in gears 1-3 and for me not worth going beyond that because you're really just talking about making 4th gear pull harder and that's jail speeds if not on the track.

I have a GTX 2860. 3" downpipe works fine. Making ~285whp on stock fuel system and adding single port aux as soon as I stop being lazy and install it to get the 300 mark but won't be going for much more.

Man, I completely forgot about an LSD. Should probably be the first thing I do huh? Easy install? And I've looked at wide body kits so I can use a bigger tire but man, cutting the fenders and ruining the stock body seems scary to me.

Edit: But even getting an LSD doesn't solve the laggy turbo problem unfortunately. And does that kit you recommended include everything or almost everything you need? Cause 4k is shit ton for just the turbo kit without fuel upgrades, hoses, sensors, etc.

Cut the fenders and you can forget about any resale value, if that is important to you. Just saying...

Just buy my used S280 and play it safe with 300+ HP.

One of the fastest Fiesta ST's on the 1/4 doesn't even have an LSD. After seeing that,I've tossed ever getting one out the window. Just know why you're getting it. I had a powerful FWD car with an LSD and it just meant I spun 2 tires. I understand it can make a difference on the track, but for a daily, maybe not enough to warrant purchasing.

It doesn't include fuel upgrade or sensors but literally everything else. It's the Peron G25-550 kit with a bunch of custom shit added to it. It's an intake, tubular exhaust manifold with external wastegate, turbo + blanket, downpipe and more. No sensors because I bought his sensors lol. I'd buy his full kit if my wife wouldn't kill me for it

Not sure where you're spooling with the MRX kit but my 2860 doesn't hit full boost until ~4500 but it pulls like hell from there until the rev limiter where the G25 is at full boost at 3800ish.

Truth - LSD helps a minimal amount in a straight line.

IDK if it was me and this was my daily, I'd probably stop at 300-320whp with an S280 build.

As someone said, at 400whp it's only a matter of time before the motor grenades. I'd argue 350whp is also pushing the stock motor a little overboard (and I'm aware of a few folks that have blown motors at this level).

I will echo CSM and I can speak from knowledge because it’s what I did. 400 whp on our cars for daily street driving is a bit nutty and hard to deal with. I have an S280 on my car and I have hit 300whp and 340 ft lbs of of torque on E30 and can tell you anything over 300 whp while fun for a minute starts to distract from the drivability of the car. I absolutely love my setup on pump gas tunes . I pull 284 ft lbs of torque and 284 HP its rather sweet.
I have E30 tune if I want to go nuts and the car drives great. I will also add ya if your just interested in straightline maybe you may not need a LSD but these cars were not built for drag racing . They excel in handling and with that a LSD really adds to the car a lot . So much so that Ford made it a factory option on the MK8 in Europe realizing they had missed the mark by not putting it in the MK7.5.

P.S. If you really want 350-380 on a S280 injectors and HPFP and you are there. My tuner who happens to be one of the top S280 tuners even mentioned to me that I could hit 340whp by just adding injectors and mentioned he has several injectors only s280 cars out there.s So ya unless you want to spend a lot of money to be different the S280 is a pretty solid choice . Has a pretty fast spool , not as fast as a Whoosh hybrid but that makes it a bit more drivable and has a broad flat tq band that makes it pull like a freight train all the way to redline.

I can't imagine chasing 300, much less 400 whp in this car. I'm at maybe 220/300wtq and often worry I've overshot power. That said, all depends on how you define "worth it" and what you want from your daily driver. For me, this car was pure magic right off the shelf... I probably would've been happy with just a catback and bov.

I debate this all the time - did I go wrong getting a big turbo that pushes all the power to the top of the rev range instead of a hybrid that keeps the stock powerband but has more power across it all? Then I rev it out to 7k pulling hard until it bounces the limiter and forget that train of thought entirely lol

I did absolutely love the car with just the MP215 from mountune and a cobb cat back. Warranty friendly all the way and never gave me a problem

Perhaps you don't need an LSD on slicks on a prepared strip but on street tires in the real world an LSD is one of the most enjoyable mods you can do, especially if you are running anything but the stock turbo and even more so if you run light wheels.

Light wheels woke my FiST up. the X-47R made it frantic. The LSD made it focused.
