I have not found a suitable interface to change the stock HU so the best bet for really making things better is to add in a processor, amp(s) speakers and subs, which I am going to so as soon as I have the time, I have the parts on hand.

A simple speaker upgrade will help as will carefully done sound deadening so you could do a little sub/amp/speaker and deadening job and make it much better for not a ton of money.

There is not specific system for these cars, I could develop one but I am retired and it just takes to much time to manage it once done.

The best improvement overall in most cars is some sound deadening, done right it does not add a great deal of weight.

I should know as I have been into car audio for 46 years, specialized in sound deadening products for 15 years, helped tens of thousands of my fellow enthusiasts, etc....all great fun, mostly:)

Can this be done without an aftermarket head unit ? I want the stock head unit to stay the way it is.

Absolutely, all it depends on is budget, wants, needs, time willing to put into it, etc......:)

I had a new $900 processor that was a bit overkill for this project, sold it, bought a Precision Power, something 88, forgot right now, it will do all I need.

Plenty of room for a decent sub and amp in the back, I deleted my spare tire so I have room for an amp, 12" sub, batter, washer bottle, tools, etc...all but the washer and battery will be quick disconnect and low in weight.

Rick, which processor would you recommend for budget minded folks?

I bought a couple of Precision Power DSP-88R as I wanted something small, low weight and not to crazy as it just does a 2-way and sub which is all these little cars need.

I read some good reviews on it from a couple of guys I trust.

I got a pair for something like $389 shipped, one is for my dually if needed once I pick a HU for it.

I have not seen them that low since but Black Friday is coming up.

Thanks, I was thinking at some point of replacing the door speakers too. They are really sub-par compared to what you can find aftermarket.

I had not looked at reviews for the processor for some time, it seems FORD HU's are a pain to get right with them or any processor......

And getting an aftermarket HU to work with all the factory stuff in the Ford is not either easy or sometimes possible.......

Then they make it nearly impossible to hook up a back up cam......

I love this car but the manf is not impressing me much with their work in this department, like purposely doing this and there is not good reason except maybe sell more NAV units......?

I have more digging to do, besides the two hours I just spent this morning and many many other hours.....

I might end up just using a line driver and EQ/crossover, analog.....a nice big step backwards in so many ways.....
