Transmission Break-in?

Hey everyone,

My 2017 ST recently developed the dreaded transmission whine. I took it in to the dealer and they found a bad transmission input shaft bearing. Luckily, the car was under warranty and my local dealer has been excellent to deal with. They are replacing the whole transmission and I should have the car back today or tomorrow.

Is there a break-in procedure for the new transmission? Should I change my driving habits or does it not matter? Just wanted to check before I get the car back.

Thanks!

Yes. Take your time, accelerate gently, shift smoothly. Put in in every gear (including reverse) often, vary your speed, and listen to make sure it sounds smooth. Give it 600 miles of easy living. After 3-5 thousand miles, change the fluid with 2 qts. of super excellent full synthetic. I used Ravenol, but whatever you use, make sure it meets Ford spec.

What is the sound of smooth is the next question? [driving].... I can attest Ravenol 75w80 is an awesome Trans fluid. One of the Best felt fluid changes I've done for the Old ball and chain!

Excellent. Thanks for the tips! I'll take it easy for the next few weeks and I'll plan on doing a fluid change later this year!

How noticeable was the transmission noise and how bad did it get?

Could you hear it with the windows down or with the radio up?

It was noticeable with the windows up. I didn't really hear it with the windows down. Could hear it over low volume radio.

It definitely wasn't obnoxious, but I was hypersensitive to it because of the few threads I've read about transmission failures. I could only hear it in 3rd - 6th gears with throttle input. I've recently driven two other STs, neither of which had the noise, so that's really what clued me into it being abnormal.

Also, it was an input shaft bearing, not an output. My bad.

UPDATE
Got the car back this evening. Noise is gone, transmission feels great. All is good!

Now I just have to be patient for the next few hundred miles o_O.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!
