So, this happened on my commute home today:

It doesn't look nearly as close in the video as it did in person. Needless to say, I was glad I was in a 2700 pound car with good brakes and decent tires.

I recently bought a dashcam for this very reason. A few years back I got into an accident (a minor one) that was hard to prove my innocence without footage and I don't want to be screwed again.

Yeah, word to the wise--dash cams are cheap insurance. They're easy to hard wire into the car, they will start up and record when you hit the ignition. Set it and forget it... until you need it. The trick is to set it BEFORE you have that accident where the footage would have come in handy.

x2 on the car/dash-cam. Get a fuse tap from amazon or local auto store, tap in to the obd2 connector fuse (for those with UPS or anti battery drain circuits and want it perma on) or the wiper fuse for post ignition recording. The fuse box is behind the glove box and you can just hide the wire behind the weather stripping popping out a little at the top of the windshield before tucking it into the headliner.

x3 on the dash cam. I wasn't a part of the accident, but witnessed a utility truck bust through the median and flip on a bridge directly in front of me. Have to appear in court with the video as evidence soon. Worth the ~$80 investment absolutely.

So every time you drive it turns on and off automatically, you just have to press record and stop or what? I would love to get one of these but Im just wondering about the process of using one like how often you have to clear the memory card to make room for more space and all that.

Glad you were able to avoid that though, would not have been pretty.

It turns on when your car is on, off when it is off. Different ways to hardwire it and if you do that, you can record even when the car is parked. It records in 1, 3 or 5 minute intervals (some overlap 1 second, most will continue right where it drops off). It will then delete the oldest file so you can keep recording. 8GB gets you around 1hr of 1080p recording, 16 is 2hrs and 32 is 4hrs. Some have GPS to track your speed and location (some don't like it, some do).
