Filling the FiST with fuel

Anyone else notice that their FiST doesn't like it when you try to even up the dollar amount (top it off)? Twice now, the pump stops, try to squeeze just a little bit more in to even up the dollar amount and it dumps a pint on the ground under the car.

My Explorer didn't like more than a few extra clicks and it would do this, but this thing doesn't like much more than the first click or two and done.

I thought maybe it was just the pump I was on the first time (the sensor was effed and let it over fill) so I figured I would try again.

My OCD kicks in and I can't stand dollars and change on my fill-ups. lol

Yeah you might also notice some stalling if you top it off, I know I saw it the couple of times i've topped off completely.

Haven't seen that yet, but I haven't been able to get past 2 clicks without it peeing on the ground.

Just go in and pay with cash, always even then and sometimes cheaper per gallon since you paid with cash.

I remember reading something in the manual about not going past two "click stops" when filling up. They also say to leave the nozzle inserted for a few seconds (5?) after the fuel has stopped, before removing the nozzle.

I never top off. Too many ruined charcoal EVAP canisters and damaged fuel gauges in my past. I let it run until it clicks off and that's it.

Tried letting pump shut off on its own few times. Always ended up with gas on the ground. Gave up on that bull smit. One of few things hate about this car.

Mine doesn't click off at all about half the time. Done it on several stations, several pumps, in my hand and on all the slow/fast fill settings on the catch. The dealer barely looked at it when I took it in, but we're not done yet.

Yup small gas tank. It tops it off for you. Any more an fuel is all over the place

Yeah, I had it happen the first time I tried to squeeze more in it but have since stopped as soon as it clicks. That seems to keep it from spilling.

This. Been through 2 charcoal cannisters on my scion xA, because when you overfill you end up pushing fuel through the EVAP lines.

Sounds like the Fiesta has an overflow dump because dumping fuel on the ground would be preferrable to flushing your EVAP system with gas!

Yes,
This is why there are signs and instructions as to NOT top off your tank.

This all started some years ago when vented gas caps were stopped being used.
The EVAP system was added to emission controls.
The plan is to not allow hydrocarbons to just evaporate out of cars.

However people still like to top off their tanks.
The problem is that the EVAP system is now the means by which air is allowed back into your tank.
Without that air returning into the tank, the fuel pump cannot draw the fuel out and your car can stall.

The next issue is that continued topping off will fill and destroy the charcoal canister.
I have replaced many of these as a Smog Tech. and they are not cheep or covered by warranty if damaged by topping off.

I have never heard of any kind od dump system as this would defeat the purpose.
Some cars do back surge more easily than others.

First off, OCD doesn't just "kick-in" unless it's comorbid with schizophrenia, in which case you wouldn't really "know" that it kicks in. Sorry, but it's offensive when people say things like "I'm so ADD!" Or "OMG, I get so OCD about that."

You wouldn't say "oh, my cancer 'kicked-in'" if you didn't have cancer would you? Unless you've been medically diagnosed please try to refrain from using psychological issues as metaphor. Thanks.
