Thanks. So the existing % is how much ethanol would be in my 93 octane? I always put 93 in so I'd just have to figure out how much octane is in that?

Nevermind, just figured out it will be on the pump. Duh.

So after that just put in the amount of gallons for each, the ethanol blend and 93 octane gas?

Example; since our our tank is around 12 gallons, I put 3 gallons E85 and 9 gallons 93. It came out at E29. So will that be bad for an E30 tune??
Yes pay attention to what you are putting as there are many 93 oct pumps with 10% E added so get the pure gas stuff or add the 10% to your calc .. Keeping track is just book work after that and paying attention while running the E tunes so you dont get someplace without a E85 pump and you not having a choice but to swap maps. But if you can do it the in car gauge is the best option imho for instant readings of what you are putting in the car..

I have a pretty good self tuned stage 3 E40 tune right now, but I'll be going big turbo in the near future and im not dumb enough to try to self tune that. so when the time comes you are definitely going to be my guy. After seeing you work with robs car in person I'm very impressed.
Thank you for the comments, look forward to work with you when you are ready!

That's what I'm talking about. No idea what I'm doing when it comes to stuff.
It's fairly simple, I mix on every fill up. I run the car down to when the gas light comes on then I do 3 gallons E85, and fill the rest up with 93.

You can always search Google. I know a chart is posted on here somewhere I just don't recall where and it's buried pretty deep in my phone.

I use this calculator: http://www.intercepteft.com/calc.html

Thanks guys for all the help. Sad thing is I don't really have a close E85 station :\ I'm still going to look into it though.

Another quick question, why is E30 the most common tune? I keep seeing places do E30 tunes, but I'm hearing there's also E30, E40, etc. So you would need a different tune for each one of those "E" tunes?

Some of us have installed a ethanol percentage gauge and sensor. This is really not necessary, however.

This is what I did to get started using e85:
1. I purchased the Holley "test tube", followed the directions and tested out the e85 I was planning on using. It turns out that Propel (the e85 I use) was actually e85. This is good to know because it affects your inputs to step 2. Follow the directions, add water, then e85, and shake the test tube. Then read out the percentage of ethanol.

2. I have an Android phone, so I downloaded two programs:
a. e85 mix calculator - This takes care of the math on how many gallons of 91 octane gas and how many gallons of e85 I need to use.
b. Propel app. This lets me know where all the Propel (e85) gas stations are located at.

In my case, the Arco gas and the Propel gas I use are both in Fullerton, CA, and are only 5 blocks apart.

3. You need to have a good idea how much fuel is in your tank. The way I do this is to fill up with 91 octane gas when the miles until empty says 60 or 40 or 30 or 20, and keep track of the number of gallons I needed to add to fill the tank. Subtract this from 12.4 ( number of gallons in a FiST), and you will know how many gallons you have in your tank.

Example: I filled up my ST when I had 28 miles until empty. I used 11.07 gallons, which means I had 12.4 - 11.1 gallon = 1.3 gallons in the tank. 40 Miles until empty usually means I have 2 gallons of gas in the tank.

Then you plug in the numbers into the e85 mix calculator and it tells you how many gallons of gas and how many gallons of e85 to put into your tank.

So, if I have 1 gallon of fuel in the tank, and its 91 octane, this means its 10% ethanol. Propel e85 has 85% ethanol, and my desired E% is 40.

According to the app, I put 6.84 gallons of Arco and 4.56 gallons of e85.

Then the ethanol percentage gauge confirms that I have e40.

The only thing that changes the second fill up is the E% in the tank. It goes up from e10 to e40.

Get the e85 mix calculator program and play with it, and it will become very clear what and how you use it.

That's for the post. I'll definitely be looking into that app if I do decide to go down this route.

This gets very detailed in the different e-tunes. Is anyone running straight e85? I would honestly pefer doing that and keeping everything simple. I would buy the aux fuel system to make things run smoother. Anyone have opinions about that or e85 not worth it?

Hpfp can't keep up with full e85. Usually most run e30-40

To me it seems to be more issue than its worth. The only gas stations near me that have E85 are sheetz and my experience with their 93 octane hasn't been good, negative corrections all day long for no reason. I switched to shell (and occasionally BP) and now the negative corrections are very rare. I guess I could run E85 from sheetz and 93 from shell, but now I have to take a can to sheetz and fill it up then mix it at shell when I fill up the rest of the tank. So for me a 93 tune will be for daily driving and E40 tune for race day.

How far away is the ethanol from the Shell? Mine are about 1.5 miles as a bird flies. So if it's fairly close, you can baby the car over without hurting anything.

I put in the 91 octane in first, then drive over to Propel. Now I'm close to a 76 station that has both 91 and e85. It all depends on where you live. I also have a 5 gallon can from Jeggs just in case.

It's really not. Run until the light comes on, 4-4.5 gallons of e85, then the rest is 93/91.
This is probably how I will do it. How far off can the mixture be before you start having problems?

Both stations are close to my work, the sheets is maybe 2 miles and the shell is about 3, but in the opposite direction and there is no direct route from one to the other. It wouldn't be too hard to get a 5gal gas can and put 4.5 gal of E85 in it and drive over to the shell, dump the e85 in first then fill up the rest of the way with 93. I just downloaded that app on my phone and it seems to make it pretty easy on how much to put in it. I just see myself getting lazy with it and running a 93 tune most of the time and just do the E40 on occasion.

E85 stations seem to be few and far between here. I have a few gas stations that have race gas that aren't too far, but that shit is expensive...I may get a tune for 100 octane, but I doubt that I would use it very often.

This is exactly how I use my e30 tune and I'm very happy to have the option. Worth it for sure.

GateCityRadio I can't give you an exact answer, but if you're supposed to be e30, id say your safe up to e40. Anything beyond would be highly questionable. As I always do, I suggest you speak with your tuner to determine how far off your ethanol can be before its detrimental.

I'm e-mailing back and forth with adam at tune+ right now and I'll be sure to ask. I still have a little bit before I get my cyborg put on, but my plans are to have a 93, E40, and maybe a race gas tune.

I'm very interested in your E40 tune results, as I would like to work with Adam on a E30 tune. Please chime in with your experiences on the Ethanol tune plus what Adam had to say about your question on what happens when the Ethanol mix isn't exactly perfect. When does it become detrimental?

I didn't expect the process to work quite as quickly as it did, and Adam sent me an E30 file earlier today. I asked him the question on how vital was the E30 mix, and he said the tune was fine up to E40. I took that to mean not to run the file below E30 as well, and I ordered the summit E85 test tube kit to see what my local E85 dealer is actually supplying.

I will add 4 gallons of "good" E85 assuming my local station is selling quality fuel, and then I will mix with 7 gallons of 93 octane Chevron. This should give me a little cushion on the ethanol content on either side, so that I don't go over or under what Adam suggest.
